DIY fish food

*tips his hat to RD* Science (and the testing that goes with it) is a wonderful thing. Even the tests that go wrong give useful information that can be used to make the next test the most successful yet.

I do supplement the pellets I feed, but mainly because when I feed live I notice my fish color up better and seem to enjoy going after their food more. So, I supplement some occasional worms or crickets that were grown specifically for feed purposes. These to my SA/CA cichlids, not my herbivores.

If you read carefully, you will see that the entire recipe is cooked, simply meaning that my shrimp are double cooked. Cooking vegetables is what causes them to lose their vitamins. Raw vegetables are always preferable over cooked. Cooking meat will not change it's vitamin content, however, it will kill any parasites that could live in the raw fish and shell fish. If you look carefully at the ratios I've used, you will see that my veggie matter makes up a good portion of my recipe, and would be comparable to the ratio used in manufactured fish foods. However, mine does not contain starch and other fillers, meant to add bulk but not sustenance.
Garlic is a very powerful attractant, which is part of why it's used. It's also used because it's a natural antibiotic, which helps my fish stay healthy.
Anyway, it's a solid recipe, my fish love it, and I thought I'd share for anyone else who is interested.

This is a lie. Cooking vegetables and meats make them loose vitamins and minerals. Heat denatures protein and makes it harder for the body to absorb. The vitamins and minerals in vegetables when cooked breaks them down and makes it impossible for your body to absorb again. You can loose up to 60 percent of the vitamins by cooking them. Even in humans you should eat the vegetables and fruit raw not cooked. The body then secretes most as waste.

This argument is crazy homemade fish food is better if you follow a good recipe. Kelp and ruff-age is needed for good digestion aka fiber. Wheat is good but in unprocessed form. Pellet from distributers are bad, because they are bad for fish to much processed steps. Gelatin is bad because it dirties water. Im going to start making my own flakes and pellets. They both take away proteins because you have to dehaydrate the food and boil the food for a few second. The only way you insure proper nutrients if your that crazy about it is add pieces of vegetable or fruit in raw form. I know for a fact homemade food is way better then store bought because we get fresh ingredients while they buy theirs in bulk that is unsafe for human consumption. Aka pogy plants which are by my house, are like 70 percents of dog food and fish food its called pogy flakes or pogy meal. They are no real standards for animal foods and products. So make your own. I will boil it fry it or w.e chances are it beats the crap out of any ones elses.

Personally I have chosen to make a mixture of frozen and prepared foods for my fish.

I use:
Frozen bloodworms
Frozen brine shrimp
Crushed massivore
Frozen mysis shrimp
Raw market shrimp
Crushed NLS thera+
Night crawlers

I blend all the stuff together, add a few drops of tank water and freeze it into cubes which my fish love!
