Would anyone be interested to see a tutorial of how I build fake tree stumps out of pvc? I just started a new one and I have been keeping pics of it if someone is interested I can post pics and how I go about it/what not to do lol.

Always good to see. Post away!

I started by building a wooden “mold” more like a stretcher. I built it the height of the tank, and cut a piece of 6 inch PVC that used to be a homemade Reactor. I cut the PVC a little bit longer in the height of the tank so that I would have some to cut off later. It took me about 15 minutes to build the wooden stretcher. I made the top 5 1/2“ x 5 1/2“ so that would fit inside of the 6 inch PVC, with the bottom getting bigger. I then took the piece of PVC and put it in my oven to soften the material. DISCLSIMER: heating PVC can create fumes, use common sense and properly ventilate. At this point I have heated it and stretched it one time, I will do this multiple times before I am done.

Continue! Awesome I've been wanting to build some trees for a riprarium in the future
(Probably be easier than hunting dead trees in the middle of the desert)

A couple more “meltings” and I’ve got the base expanded to well over eight inches. After it cooled, I cut the bottom off flat (tricky, you just have to cut a little at a time until it sits the way you want). I used the top part that gets cut off to experiment with what kind of texture I wanted. I use a dremel to cut and form the grooves for wood grain or in this case a fake bark texture. Always always always do a little experimenting before you launch into the new piece. I used a pencil and lightly drew on the jagged top but I always do the texture first and then cut the top. This allows the texture to stay consistent throughout. Now a quick test fit in the tank....

The best part is pvc doesn’t release tannins into the water. It’s hollow too so it’s a good place for hiding heaters, water pipes, etc. or a good place for plecos to hide, etc. doesn’t throw off the water parameters.... what’s the word? Passive, non reactive, inert, dang help me out here.

Inert works here.

I not going to hijack the thread, but well your cooking up PVC.

If it is sanded lightly 80 grit. Sculpey polymer clay will bond perfectly to it.

Giving lots of artistic possibilities. Just a 10 minute bake at 200. Just support the build with tin foil.
