Do you use Cypress Mulch?

Sanichips are made from aspen. I'm not sure on the sustainability of aspen harvest worldwide. Aspen is one of the few hardwoods that regenerates quickly enough to be competitive with yellow pine culture, so it would seem it is at least potentially sustainable (timberland with slow-growing trees, like oak, hickory, tulip poplar, maple, etc., is often replanted in yellow pine monoculture after harvest, which has negative effects on wildlife, hydrology, etc.).

*EDIT* I didn't realize there were both aspen and "regular" sanichips. The regular sanichips are made from various hardwoods. If they were just made from waste wood from lumber manufacture, that would be fine, but the manufacturer's website indicates they are made from "selected hardwoods". Possibly they are using small trees from clear-cut operations, or even slash. I would avoid them and stick to the coco products for peace of mind.

hmmmmm food for thought.....

Is there anything that can be used as a substrate that is harvested sustainably?
I like my cypress mulch.

I have found that coco-fiber is pretty comparable to cypress and it is a sustainable resource. It looks nice, keeps the humidity at good levels, is absorbent, and keeps odors down. You can buy it in the bricks (which I think are a pain in the ...) or you can buy it uncompressed in a bag. Petco sells the uncompressed bags for about $9 or so. 1 bag is enough to put a 1"-1 1/2" layer of substrate in a 75/90 gallon tank.

eco earth is coconut fibers right? dont use it for frogs it sticks to them and they get it into their water-would this happen to my ball python?

Crazy, I'm from around there and had no idea. I suspect the impact from herpers in minimal compared to gardening. I bought a bag once to try as snake substrate and the lowes check out person looked at me quizzically, "Just one?" lol.
Just use cocofiber and newspaper now. I'm going to give my sister a heads up she buys it by the truckload for her yard.

I use it for my BP's and as long as you change the water as you should it doesn't become a big deal. It doesn't stick to their skin though.
