DOES ANYBODY USE COLD WATER FOR WATER CHANGES?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks everybody ... so the consensus is if temp only goes down to mid 70's(TANK):) I WOULD BE SAFE?...

out door, no. water from just inside the meter is dcoming out at around 40 deg in my house. thought i killed my pirahna a couple weeks ago. wasnt paying enough attention. had the tank down to 50 deg.i was worried sick

test the water temp and relate it to your tank. IF you have a 100g tank at 80f and the tap comes out at 50, I wouldn't change more than 20% at a time. Unless I'm mistaken your average tank temp should stay above 73 in that scenario.

In the summer time (tap water in the low 70s), I would sometimes use cold, but in the winter (when tap water gets down into the low 50s) I would always use an adapter on a kitchen or bathroom sink to refill tanks.

Last year I had a hot water outdoor sill faucet installed and it works well for winter water changes; although if I do more than 200G water changes, I drain my 40G hot water heater, so my next project is getting a tankless hot water heater installed for an endless supply of hot water.

I used to use a garden hose hooked up to my backyard spigot but its all cold water and I realized I was stressing out my fish too much.

Now what I do is use my python hose. I unscrewed the green connector and used the female end. Then I bought an adapter from HD for $5 and hooked them up. Then you can add hot water with the bathroom faucet to the new tank water and its a lot less stressful for your fish. Before, my temps would go down from 80 to 70 during wc, but with the python hooked up to the bathroom faucet, I can keep it at 80 or even make the new water 85 when I feel like it. OP I know you don't have a python but its really worth it.

72°F is considered the scientifically proven low temp fish can tolerate before the temp starts affecting them.
