Does hydor inline heater need to be perfectly 90 degrees vertical?

That will probably work but why not hang it by a hook from the rim of the tank? That would eliminate any dip in the output hose from the filter.
I just got a reply back from their customer service dept. they said it should be fine but I should try to achieve a 90degrees angle to make it vertical. The issue is that tilting can cause bubbles built up inside the heater area causing the heater to go bad.
Instead of zip tying it to the stand like that, could you move it to the left a bit so that the heater would rest between the stand legs in the groove? if you zip tied it there it would be vertical and should stay in place in the groove.
I have mine setup vertical behind the tank beneath outlet tube. I initially had it in the stand underneath but to do it I had to keep the hoses looped which made it difficult every time I had to disconnect/reconnect canister. The hoses should go straight up to the tank vs looped to keep air out of the hoses. I like these heaters because the water gets heated on contact vs the regular in tank heaters where you have to wait until the water gets heated. I just wish the hydo heater came with connectors where we can just add them to the outtake tube easy peasy instead of having to cut hoses. Better yet, they should make canisters that heat the water automatically.
They do, they are just VERY pricey lol...

plecostic-I added another zip tie to straighten out. It would be nice if they make coupler connectors to allow us to hook it up from different angles. I had an easier time setting up the hydor inline than the Coralife UV. Only problem with setup in the back of the tank is that it's difficult to change temp since my tank is against the wall. Also I find it's easier to cut hose after dipping it in hot water.
Mine is against wall in back but it's to the far right of tank, there's space where I can step into to set the heater from the side. Once you set it, you can forget it, nothing else to do. I do unplug it though when I disconnect canister for maintenance. Although there are times when I didn't and it was still ok, not sure with these if you need to or not.
