I was on the phone when I got alerts to an earthquake that happened 90 miles away. The alerts said imminent earthquake and to take cover. Then the earthquake hit our area. I've experienced MANY earthquakes in my lifetime. In school in Southern California, besides routine fire drills, we had earthquake drills. This was, however, was the first time that I received a warning before the earthquake hit. Not long after the initial earthquake, I received multiple warnings about an impending tsunami, and to evacuate to higher ground if in a tsunami zone. After about an hour, the tsunami warning was cancelled. In 1964, a major portion of our local town was destroyed by a tsunami following the big Alaska Earthquake. Possible tsunamis are taken seriously around here.

Being on the southern end of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, when Cascadia goes off again, a tsunami up to 100' high might be generated and could flood up to 10 miles inland in my area.

Yeah that big wave was a non-event on the news here.

I’m on the east edge of the San Joaquin Valley, and we barely feel what happens on the coast. Even Northridge and Loma Prieta were barely noticed here, 600’ above sealevel.

But I’ve been up and down the coast from SanDiego to Seattle, designing big buildings, and clearly there’s a lot of expensive realestate at risk.

In our community we take tsunami warnings seriously. Our downtown was destroyed by a tsunami in 1964 after the Alaska Earthquake.

In 2011 The tsunami from the big earthquake in Japan destroyed our harbor.

Still, these tsunamis are nothing compared to the big one that will happen when Cascadia Subduction Zone goes off. The author of this article won a Pulitzer Prize for her article. The Pacific Northwest will be destroyed by Cascadia and the resulting tsunami. The earthquake will probably be more than 9 on the Richter Scale and last minutes. The resulting tsunami could be 100' high and capable of moving 10 miles inland. The topography of the west coast will be drastically changed.

Here's an article about historic tsunamis on California

Even Fox News jumped on the story of our earthquake a few days ago and how it could trigger the BIG ONE - the megathrust earthquake greater than 9 on the Richter scale - Cascadia Subduction Zone - that could go off any time.

Let’s hope this doesn’t happen. Never heard of the cascadia subduction zone but have heard for decades of a possible mega tsunami in California.

"Drop, cover, hold" is the standard phrase for what to do during an earthquake. Crawl under heavy furniture (a desk or table) and cover your head and face with your arms. Stay away from windows and outside doors. If you are outside, drop to the ground and cover your head and neck.

....interesting,it doesn't seem that any move would be safe in the event of a big quake.

Cascadia Subduction Zone was discovered in the last 40 years or so. I grew up dreading the "deadly" San Andreas Fault, which is like almost nothing compared to Cascadia Subduction Zone which last went off in 1700s and could go off at any time. When it went off, the tsunami it generated destroyed coastal villages in Japan. When Cascadia was discovered, they noted underwater forests off the west coast--forests that had dropped off into the ocean. They predict that the next Cascadia event will reshape the west coast again.
