Eheim 2262, Pump Location

I've seen the posts on rotating the pump on an Eheim 2262, but I was wondering if anyone had tried removing the pump and running it beside the canister unit? Did you have any issues? I'm considering a 2262, but with my stand height, moving the pump next to the canister would would make fitment a whole lot easier.

I can't recall anyone doing that but the difficulty I see is finding compatible fittings to fit the Eheim since they are NOT U.S. standard AND making sure the pump is primed with water prior to running it.

Thank you both for the feedback. The cabinet opening on the stand is 21" and inside is roughly 25-26" inches high, so I could likely go with the side placement option for the pump, but separating the pump would be ideal. Worst case I could put the filter next to the aquarium. I've wanted this filter for quite a while, so I'm trying to clarify how to situate the beast.

It sounds like you will get kinked hoses even if you could put up with tight clearance unless you remove or change pump alignment.

Any external pump can be used. The canister body is just a case.

Have you considered a slide out tray for the canister? Some hollow round bar under a plank would do but there are heavy duty options to buy if your not handy.

I could go with a slide out tray, but I'd still be limited to the 21" height of the cabinet opening, unless I'd be willing to cut through a 2x6. I'm currently using an FX6, which I can get into and out of the cabinet without problems, but I want to upgrade to the 2262.

The cabinet opening on my 220G stand is 20.5" so I understand what you are dealing with. What I do is drain the filter before maintenance, disconnect the hoses with the quick disconnects and then tilt the filter to get it out. It's worked for me for 15+ years though it's getting more difficult to crawl around on the floor and under the stand getting everything disconnected.

You could place the filter next to the aquarium and disguise it with a table and tablecloth or make an attractive wooden box stand that covers it.

The 2262 is a beast and the filter itself is pricey, the media cost almost as much. Since you are talking about seperating it why not buy a 7 gallon bucket + pump and just make your own for like 1/3rd the price?

You can lay it on its side if your careful not to get media bypass. The newer filters are rectangular with internal trays which makes that easier.

If placing beside the tank, you may as well raise it closer to the tanks water level to get more efficient pump flow.

I'm sure you will find a suitable solution. It's not hard to modify a cabinet. Maybe 2 x smaller canisters.

My suggestion comes from years of owning an operating the 2262- and not being a huge fan despite using 2217’s on a lot of my smaller tanks
