Eheim 2262, Pump Location

The 2262 is a beast and the filter itself is pricey, the media cost almost as much. Since you are talking about seperating it why not buy a 7 gallon bucket + pump and just make your own for like 1/3rd the price?
I'd go with all poret foam on media in a 2262, like I currently do in my FX4 and 6, so cost wouldn't be too bad. As far as the bucket and pump solution, I'm afraid I'd be so worried about leaks I'd never get a food night's sleep.

that will save some money, FYI my pump blew out at the grey ring that connects the pump to the bucket and drained a 180 into my basement and I've been playing around with a rebuild for about 18 months

Yikes..... I own one and would like to hear more details. Are you talking about the union/impeller cover? The one where a light twist locks the union in place? If so, did it pop off? or leaked around the oring?

I'm going to drill out my input to make a siphon break... dumping 150 gallons into my bedroom would not be good.

Thank you both for the feedback. The cabinet opening on the stand is 21" and inside is roughly 25-26" inches high, so I could likely go with the side placement option for the pump, but separating the pump would be ideal. Worst case I could put the filter next to the aquarium. I've wanted this filter for quite a while, so I'm trying to clarify how to situate the beast.
if you end up putting it next to the barrel, I would suggest doing what the picture shows.. but have the pump raised to the same height on a platform. That way you don't lose out whatever the intended design was... (like priming)

Yes, I removed the original pump from my Eheim 2262 some years ago because it was too tall to fit inside my cabinet stand. At first, I used 3/4" pipe fittings at the existing lid hole, and I just moved the pump a foot or so from the filter body, with the pump body suspended from the roof of my stand. It worked ok for a while. The rubber gasket avoided leaks at the lid entry hole. But the original Eheim pump itself leaked (overly-thin intake volute cracked from movement, twice). So I replaced the Eheim pump with a new external DC pump, again mounted to the roof of my cabinet. That worked fine for a couple of years. But priming either pump still remained a hassle.

Then I got creative. I had 2 ideas in mind: (1) self-priming & (2) more flow.

My solution was
This worked splendidly, and it's still my current setup (years later). For larger pipes, I drilled a bigger hole into the 2262 lid, and used a much larger stainless steel elbow as TOP INTAKE. A bigger external pump now attaches to the existing original 2262 bottom spigot, so the 2262 BOTTOM is now OUTPUT (no longer INPUT) to the pump. This means my pump is below the canister body. This is the REVERSE of the 2262's original direction of flow, and became a self-priming system that never runs dry. The new Ecotech external pump is more powerful, has a more robust volute, and it never leaks. The larger in/out pipes gave my tank excellent water circulation, so debris now flushes itself into the filter instead of settling in the tank. So happy now.

Thank you cvar, this is the kind kind of information I was looking for. Now to find a 2262 less the pump.

This thread is not a great endorsement for the filter...! Do they still sell them?

I've got 3 or 4 of them no longer used along with about 10 other canister models I've stopped using.

I've got large tanks so I use 20L (5 gallon) buckets dropped straight into the tank with a powerhead buried under media. Instant canister filter (but internal). I don't have to worry about canister leaks or power outages. 20L is a comfortable size to pull out when cleaning. I leave the handle on.
