No way you could have used play sand without a problem. I've used about a dozen bags of the stuff. I washed one of them for 45 minutes straight, and it still clouded up my water.

The only sand I've ever used that I could just dump it straight in without washing and NOT have a huge cloud of dust was pool filter sand, and it still clouds the water somewhat.
I don't fill the tank up then dump it in, i put the sand in then fill it, then stir it. I've dumped it in to a half drain tank, but it never looked like that, it was cloudy but not even close to that bad.

Way to go justin.

Too bad about your laptop, Justin. We look forward to what you always have to share, regardless if it takes awhile do to what ever type of set back may occure. And once again you have shown us that your experiences speaks for themselves. Nice job on the sand selection. Keep up the outstanding work.

Thanks for the encouraging words David. :) well I have not yet got the new charger for my PC but will load pics when I do in the next day or two.

Update, the 10g is now filtered by a DIY'ed model 300 FBF (fluidized bed filter) and I moved my 120g from the garage to the dining room, moved the fish in my 125g to the 120g and moved the 125g tank to the garage. Both tanks are now running with fish. I cut the mangrove BG for the 300g, fit to size and am ready to install tomorrow afternoon. The 125g is serving as a holding tank for the fish in the 300g while I work on it/sell some of them. I put 90% of those fish up for sale this week (see NW marketplace section) ;) I made a major change last week on what I am keeping going forward... The 125g has 2 FX5's and a 40watt UV. :D the 120g is running with a single FX5, I LOVE how this tank is plumbed, flow rate etc..

I have some great pics to load soon!

^ Good, I'd love to see how you cut the stump BG. Was it a PITA?
I took lots of pics cutting it up. Its pretty easy, score, snap, done. That was on the mangrove BG though. I gave the background with the stump to aclockworkorange for his tank.

I decided I want to make the 125g a big fry tank.

I can't wait to see the latest pics. And to see if the S Map plan works out...

How do you tell the Maps apart from the other Satanoperca?

I wonder if any of mine are different varieties. Two of mine match perfectly (they were from the same batch though) but the other shares almost none of their colors. So many variants.

I can't wait to see new pics either! I'm sure that 120 looks great up and running, I love the background on it.

P.S. Thanks for the tip about soaking the driftwood, I'll get started on that. :)

Your welcome! While your soaking it, overdose it in a salt while its under water. That will kill off an nasties hitching a ride on the wood, that and it will sink when you get your tank. I was blown away when I moved the plants. The anubias is 10"x26" and I pulled a 5' pothos out of the back. :D The other was 3' long.

Dave the best way to tell the difference is collection point. (lower Orinoco). Maps have very large lips, are mostly head. The spotting on the muzzle region is covered in tightly grouped lime green spangling. There is no spotting under the dorsal seperating maps from common leuco's. < That's a 8" female map in my avatar. I miss her :(

Hey justin, wanted to chime in about the washing sand bit...

I bought some of our favorite sand from Wet Spot, and being the lazy bastard I am, dumped 25 pound of it straight in my 20 gallon without washing it. ZERO clouding. The tank has been running as a hospital tank for a week now and is crystal clear.

How lucky are we to have the best sand around? Maybe we should start selling it! Haha.
