I'm thinking that I will buy two Aquaclear 50's to filter my new 55 gallon tank. What do you guys think? Over-kill? not enough? Or not the right choice in set-up?

And that is a minimum. Ac110's move 500gph so 2 would be a good choice. Or you could do 2 emperor 400's. Or go with canisters. Its your choice and as long as you put good media in them and get a good turn over rate amount you will be fine.
