I'm thinking that I will buy two Aquaclear 50's to filter my new 55 gallon tank. What do you guys think? Over-kill? not enough? Or not the right choice in set-up?

I agree-----if you are going to put a good stock amount in the tank, then you will need about a 10-12x turn over rate with hong on the back filters (hob's) so you need about 55g x10= 550 gallons per hour of filtration. And that is a minimum. Ac110's move 500gph so 2 would be a good choice. Or you could do 2 emperor 400's. Or go with canisters. Its your choice and as long as you put good media in them and get a good turn over rate amount you will be fine.

You may only need one AC110 alot of people on here go way overboard on filtration. (I am guilty of this myself my 55 gallon has a 300 GPH HOB filter a large eheim canister filter and an undergravel with powerheads lol. If you have the money then grab 2 ac110 otherwise start out with one it couldn't hurt unless you plan to stock it heavily very quick.
I would suggest AC110's you can start out with one. Or you can do 2 AC 70's. The smaller AC's really are not impressive. I would really suggest NOT getting two of the 50's.
