Finally Bought myself some DISCUS!

i know what your saying about the bio load, and plants and space, and although they are only 1.5 inch now, i realize that yes they will grow and i am planning for it, even if i spilt them between the 45 and 55 later on, or just get a bigger tank size all together, that has not been decided yet. yes, i am buying them good food, and yes (although i only had them for a day) i will do regular water changes, making sure to clean the gravel thoroughly. thanks for your concern and advise.

right now i am also looking at the benefits of different types of filters (as i have an AC filter now) the most popular seems to be the sponge filter for discus, easy to clean, and alot cheaper than canister filters or AC filters, and thats the one im looking to buy right now.

I don't mean to sound like I am getting down on you either.
I like the idea of splitting the tanks. Could do totally different setups/decoration/look. Maybe one blackwater and the other with nice LED lighting. That would be sweet.

Anyhow, I have made my share of mistakes, I just want you to be successful.
Seriously though, a UV sterilizer makes the water Crystal clear. I picked up my in tank one for around $55 and I think it was rated at 90 gallons.

nice, i apreciate the advise though, seriously, cuz ive been keeping fish for years but never discus, so im very excited to learn about them more, i've been on the discus forum reading about their suggestions and experiences alot today, looking forward to having a successful tank! Thanks!

looking good bro

Nice tank and discus!

I wouldn't worry about the size of the tank right now, the fish are still small but you should start looking for some good deals on tanks for upgrade later, 55 gal is good but if you can find a space for 75 even better, you have time! Enjoy them while their little, they are awesom!

your tank is fine for now. I do agree that a 75 would be much better than the 55. same 48", but that extra 6" of width will make scaping much easier. I would be more concerned with that gravel. juvies need to be fed 6-8 times per day and it's going to be hard to really clean the bottom. should have went bb for a while or use sand.

id take out everything and leave the tank bare bottom for easier maintenance. feed a lot of good food. a lot of water changes. and when they get big then add decors. or else you'll stunt them. but good start, their health and size depends on you.

I am not a Discus expert, but the way I look at it, would you put one Discus in a 10 gallon? Probably not. Discus can push 7" and you have the tetras as well. They need very clean water, so the bioload will be up there. You have decorations and gravel too, so account for the fact that you are missing X amount of water contributing to the 1 in 10 rule.

If you move on with it, get a UV sterilizer.
I hope it works out.

I had 3 in a 55 with 9 tetras and that was nice, but I could tell it would get full and they would need a 75.

Good Luck

Dont put Discus in a 10... 29 gal minimum for 2

definatly agree, i am looking, although i should also be looking for a place to put that tank, right now i have the 45, 55, 2X10g's and a 29 biocube salt. so if i find a bigger tank the only way to keep it is to get rid of another, which i will probably have to do.

yea i was definatley considering it bare bottom, right now im more concerned about freaking them out lol, but they seem to enjoy swimming around for now, but adjustments can be made.

right now i just ran out of bloodworms, but im feeding them beefheart and mysis shrimp, and they definatly seem to like the beefheart better, so i think ill stick to that and bloodworms. water changes every other day, occationally i will try to make them more frequent.

i agree, no 10 gals for discus, 30 gal minimum, and then the rule starts to apply
