Fish Names

I'm not usually one to name my fish, but when I got into bichirs a little over a year ago for some reason I started naming them as I got them. Since they are a prehistoric fish I named all of them after Jurassic Park names. I have.... Blue, Charlie, Echo, Delta, Owen, Malcolm, Ellie, Grant, Henry.

The only other fish that I named other than the bichirs is my 10" oscar. I named him Walter, after Walter Matthau's character from the Odd Couple.

When my wife bought our RTGG it was only 3" long. Cute as a button so she called it tinkerbell as i suspected it was a female. Fast forward two years and the same little cute female is now a 16" ugly as sin MALE!!! Yes, I sexed it wrong, as it got bigger it became more and more obvious it was a male.

So now we have a big brute of an ugly male RTGG called tinkerbell!!!! It just dosen't seem right. I haven't the heart to tell my wife.

I usually don't name my fish. I will call them by their species name, or they eventually all become "buddy" or "buckaroo", something generic.

I did give a name to my possum wrasse, I call him itachi because his species name (w. tanakai) seemed Japanese-themed, and because of his bright red eyes. If any of you watched anime/read shonen jump as a kid, you will know what Im talking about, look at these eyes

Posting this here as it is indeed fish related. We all have that one fish that we named for some reason or another. If you didn't, you are lying or just don't love your fish lol. I wanna see what people named their fish. I've named so many.

My first Black Moore I named Molly as my teacher who gave it to me called it a black molly. (Got a 100% on my spelling test so he gave me the fish and a whole set up thus began my fish keeping hobby)
My first cory's name was Seaking after the pokemon
My first Otto cat's name was Goldeen after the pokemon
My angelfish's name was Angel
My Dwarf frog's name was Froggy
My Algae Shrimp thing was named Dr. Shemp after the Spyro the dragon boss
My Black Ghost Knife's name was Phantom
My Algae Eater's name was Shark
My pictus catfish's name was channeler
Every Severum by themselves is known as Sevvy
My Vampire Pleco is known as the black and white vacuum cleaner(Named by my girlfriend)
My girlfriends Gold Gourami was named Goober
My white betta fish was named Angel(Really a devil spawn)
All of my Red Head Geophagus are know as Geo
My other geophagus was named Jay Jay
My Striped Pike was named Pikey

I'm sure I'm missing some but I think thats most. Lets hear everyone elses fish's names.

I've named every fish I had and never repeated a name. I usually just watch 'em and see what 'fits' their personality or body type.

Kong (King Kong parrot) because he's a thug that acts like a big gorilla
Boss (Parrot) because he thinks he's in charge when he isn't
Patch (Parrot) because she sometimes gets black patches on her head and nose
Brick (baby Oscar) because he reminds me of a brick in color and build.

My first fish was named Silver (white Oranda)
Pete the Pleco (Gibby)
Peppercorn the Oranda
Tamale the Oranda
Tang the Oranda (after the orange drink Tang)
PopTop the Black Moor
Scat the Channel Catfish

Those are the ones I can think of right now.

I name all my fish to some degree. I won't list them all, just some of the more amusing or themed ones.

My schooling fish I just name after bands - Queen, Matchbox 20, Def Leopard, etc. Then I get to watch the Spice Girls squabble with Lamb of God for food.

My baby goldfish were all named after different ways to eat/prepare fish - Poached, Seafood Extender, Fillet, Deep Fried etc. My favorite was a little epileptic one named Fish-Schtick, unfortunately he didn't live past 3 years old.

My syno cats are named after iconic cats - Felix, Salem and Mike (cat in the hat).

My loaches are named after Jessie and James from Team Rocket, I did have meowth but he passed when some idiot poured alcohol into my tank.

My old geo was named Horrace. My phone is being stupid atm and won't let me upload pics so no pics, however anyone that searches my posts will find a pic of him pretty easily.

My current cichlid is a GT named River. My ex named her so because the bits on her face look like little rivers.

I had a betta named Miles because he was "miles betta than the rest"

And lastly I'll include my L397 pleco Sir Elton John II. Named so because of the similarities between a bright, colourful wood eating pleco and the flamboyant artist... Adults can figure it out.


Again if anyone wants to see pics you'll have to search for them because my phone is on the fritz. Horrace and River should be relatively easy to find as River has her own thread and I've posted Horrace approximately 93 times since joining mfk. The others may be a little harder...

The silver arowana is Valtteri because he's a silver aro and Valtteri bottas drives the silver arrow

The betta is Dakkar because of Dakkar Nemo

The three tinfoil barbs are Bic, Gillette and Wilkinson because they tend to shave all the plant leaves

The 4 Chinese algae eaters are collectively known as the suicide squad because they are basically at the bottom of the food chain in that particular tank but somehow didn't finish as fish food

My first 2 kois (an orange and white and a black and gold) were sun and moon because I was still cheesy back then

Good to point out that I have 2 tanks: Amazonia and Riverbed
