Also lost the tomini tang during a 9+ hour power outtage. Making me consider some sort of back up...water went down to 60F.
Thats a major bummer... the problem is heaters can use a ton of power... and battery backups for them dont come cheap. Also should look into a bubbler with a battery backup, on the upside with these, you can get some pretty for cheap that have battery backups built in, and since your system isnt HUGE it would probably only need 2 or 3 (depending on the size of the bubbler).

Dude you gotta post a video. I haven't seen your tank in a long time. Want to see how it's coming along with those new lights.

Yea...DO is a concern in these situations, but temp is really what got to him. I have the largest Tetra Air pump on the tank, plus a 400g rated skimmer, and two mag six powerheads pointed pretty much directly at the surface...although maintaining DO long term would be a concern I think that I am okay. The heat is what worried me.

What brands come with built in backups? Azoo I think? The tetra one is seriously high powered, durable (spent a summer outside), and cheap.

It is a bummer but I am trying to get a tiny baby chevy to replace it.

Im going to go do a short one now that will just show you guys my new pumps, and how the flow is running. Dont mind the tank everything is a mess/still recovering from the outage.

Just get a gasoline-powered generator and some extension cords, and you'll be good to go. That will be much cheaper per watt than a battery backup although the generator would have to be outside for sure, but it probably will still cost $200+ though. This is why I like that we have a natural gas backup generator at my house; no trouble at all when it comes to power outages, and there's always plenty of wattage for the heaters.

Ya i have a portable gas generator capable of powering my entire house LOL (way to big lol) but i like the idea of a natural gas one, never thought of that. That said, I insulate 4 sides of my aquaria during the fall/winter (its removable, also only ever had built into walls tanks) so they dont lose heat fast unless its really fracking cold out.

ANYWAYS, I did a quick google of battery backup air pumps, and I found this page just for some examples http://www.aquacave.com/searchresult.aspx?CategoryID=70

The natural gas one works pretty nice; it automatically kicks on when the power goes out. It's limited to a few breakers, though, so we had to place the aquariums accordingly to avoid overloading anything when the power is out since our refrigerators are on it, too.

Might be worth going 50/50 with your parents or something.

Oh and, assuming you know the power is out, i recomend wrapping your tank with blankets or something to help slow the heat loss.

We have natural gas capabilities at my house as well...but the gas guy just doesnt come to our house anymore to replace the tanks.

The chance of my parents biting on this, absolutely nil haha.

True, hard to do though since my basement (where the tank is) is already about 10F colder than the rest of the house and my house to begin with is set below 65F on the thermostat.

Could be worth a try for one of the gasoline ones; the natural gas ones aren't quite so cheap and are hooked up to your gas line and electrical system.

Might be a good idea to at least try asking since I imagine that you have power outages from snow and ice during the winter, right?
