I have a florida gar and i was wondering am i supposed to have a special kind of filter and how much water flow and what should be in the tank with it like a lot of plants and some caves or not if somebody could answer back that would be great!!
 
Nothing special at all water flow can be medium to low they like calmer water better tho...decor is nice not to much tho they need space to swim

i always aim for a 10x turnover rate.. your not going to get that once you take in all the variables, but aiming for it will give you enough flow. tank size divided by gph should equal 10. i have a pretty fast flow on my tank, and my gar do just fine in it. if they where 4" fry i would prolly pull one of my filters to get less flow, but my sub adults do just fine. biggest thing imo is haveing a tank with a wider foot print. ie a 40 breeder is a better grow out then like a 29, 75 is better then a 55. and a 120 wide or a 180 is better then a 125 or 150.. avoid anything they can become entangled in. i have a sand bottom and some driftwood that is long and flattish opposed to tall. plants are okay, but i prefer to put them in corners to help define the tank for the fish. they are swimming sticks, so they turn poorly ( granted they can turn fast when spooked, and haul butt. but this is a good way to break their backs.)
 
gars like slow to no moving water. an undergravel would be ideal as long as you maintain it. lots of plants too. many gars keepers have lost their fish because it was startled and slammed into the glass. being in a well planted tank will make it feel secure.

you do realize that your RTC hybrid will more than likely eat your bichers within 6 months?
your angel sure knows where the food comes from.
 
My recommendation is nothing smaller than a 150 gallon tall tank with a foot print of 2 feet wide 4 feet long and 31 inches tall for Florida gars. I had one filter on the tank which was an fx5, I faced the outputs more towards the surface to break the water flow a little bit. But otherwise they're air breathing fish as well so take that into consideration. Reason for such a tank this size is anything I've seen them in smaller than this they have either out grown the tank very fast or have had a broken back issue. Sand substrate with some sort of floating plant at the top creates good cover, so the gar becomes less spooked i also had a good size piece of driftwood in the middle of the tank for cover as well . I had this tank setup for 2 years and my gar were healthy at 18" eating like champs. This was my exact setup for a long time and I had no problems.

thanks guys i have a 75 gallon tank for him right now i have been looking for a 200 gallon tank for him but no luck so far and i have some plants and some caves but i think i will change that now

Ye definately the rtc hybrid wont b in the same tank...i dnt have the angel got more stock in there..now
