Fluval Biomax vs pre-filter

^^^ Second that! Don't throw them out. Just save them for an emergency.
Here is an idea of my FX5 media:
Bottom tray is filled with Fluval Biomax.
Second tray is filled with Ehiem ProSubstrate.
And top tray is filled with poly fibers.

I use the prefilter in my top basket and biomax in the middle and bottom basket. I also use the poly fiber over all media to help prevent premature clogging. The prefilter has a much smoother surface than the biomax so I think the biomax will be a better bed for the BB.

You spend hundreds of dollars on filters, tanks, equipment and even fish. Then you want to go cheap on media:screwy: Just buy a box of bio max, it'll have more surface area then filling the entire fx5 with scrubbies, I'm sure you can afford 12 bucks. When you think you can afford another 12 bucks add another box, repeat this over time until you have two full trays of the biomax.

Agreed.

You could always run to the dollar store and get a couple packs of Scrubbies, they have a huge surface area for BB.

Scubbies do not have "huge surface area for BB". If you stuff all three trays of the FX5 with scrubbies, you will only have enough recommended surface area to filter a 75g tank.

Its not $12 a box it cost $17 a box. Also i just want to see it theres a cheaper alternative nothing wrong with saving a few bucks.

Really? Biomax in Milwaukee is that expensive? In Appleton, Prefilter is around $9 and Biomax is around $12.....

Just sell me your 8" or so female motoro and use that money to stock up on Biomax....just a suggestion. :)

Obviously there is. Otherwise this thread would not exist, especially when there is a lack of research invloved.

Go online to Dr Foster and Smith. You can get Azoo brand Bio glass, 3 liters for 25 bucks. You can also get great deal on eheims ehfisubstrat but it is not recommended to be used in the FX5 by many

i love the azoo bio-glass, cheap and works great!

My FX5 has prefilter in the top tray, carbon pad in middle, and biomax on the bottom. I'm thinking of taking out the carbon and replacing it with more biomax...
