Well I have finally taken the plunge into fly fishing and I must say

I LOVE IT!!!

this has been the first week I have actually been catching anything as I sucked in my pride and asked for help
and I think I have it down now

the other day I caught 11 brookies and 14 rainbows on nymphs and a one pound brookie in the river feels like a 4 pound fish its awesome

my question is how do I keep a big fish on, I hooked a nice steelhead the other day and he took one little leap and he spit it off and i continued to loose nice fish

right now I am using an 8.5 foot rod with an 8 reel I think???
Im getting a 6 foot rod soon as the rivers here are small and the big rod just isn't practical

also I have found bringing a fly rod and spin rod pretty much garuntees fish because if they are not taking one they take the other. and boy are these trout tasty baked some in lemon juice and it was just sooo juicy and good!

Im thinking of doing fly tying over the winter to settle my addiction

and a kind of off topic thing, what gives salmonoids the ability to live in fresh or salt water

and feel free to post your tales and about your fly fishing season so far

I went yesterday for trout in the Chattahoochee and caught a mess of trout. Started with a light spiining setup with bait in the morning because i couldnt see nothing more than feet in front of me due to the mist. Caught 4 big trout biggest one being about 2= pounds and the smallest one being about 1.5 pounds. Later around 3 a bunch of trout just started to feed on midges like crazy. I hooked up 15 trout on a size twenty midge and landed about 6 and missed like 10.

nice, when it gets dark and the water is murky I throw on a fly called lester the lobster that is a big orange thing that looks like a sand shrimp or krill and the sea trout just go nuts for it especially at night

When the fish leap out of the water "bow" to the fish as they say. When you put the rod tip down it puts slack in the line so they can't break you off. Fly tying is a blast. The thing about fly fishing that draws people to it is the satisfaction of catching a nice fish after spending a lot of time practicing your cast, and creating/using your own flies. A lot more involved, but it wouldn't feel so great when you land them if it wasn't.

yea, I understand what you mean about the casting and such
I like it because it keeps me busy
a lot of people around here go to a river estuary and hook on a few baitfish cast out and sit there for hours
sure they may get nice fish but its so darn boring!!!
the feeling of a nice trout is awesome and seeing that strike indicator or hit of a dry fly is just awesome

I already have ideas for some fly patterns, I would like to make a few pheasant tail nymphs and green intruders and target those steelhead

Yeah i havent really ever used wet flies before predominantly dry flies. How do you actually know if a fish has your fly? Is it that the indicator moves or you feels it?

I use a strike indictor or I just feel it, a strike indicator is just a fancy name for a fly fishing bobber and generally I fish in fast moving water so the fish hit hard when they do hit so that they dont get caught in the current from behind their rock or hole, but when in calm water I use a fairly fast retrieve and you still feel the fish hit pretty good

I don't do much fly fishing in the river, but on lakes. I've really gotten into fly fishing largemouth bass. Man is that fun. If you think a 2-3 lb trout hits the surface hard, you should see a 5-6 lb largemouth smack a fly on the surface! I still am fine tuning my casting... especially some of the heavier lures, they can be hard to cast, but I am getting it.

I wish there were more rivers/streams around that held trout. I'd love to catch some rainbows or brookies.

For me fly fishing gives me an opportunty to catch big fish on light tackle and flies that i have tied. If a ten inch smallmouth cant pull my drag then it is set too tight. also it is awesome to catch fish on flies you tied. A lot of it is that it is challenging fishing for bass you would probably catch more if you used a spinning outfit but fly fishing is harder and funner.

Im an avid spin fisherman and have been bringing out my fly rod a lot more lately. Dry fly fishing is a blast!
