Future of Fish importation coming from China, Central America

Can anyone shed some information on the situation coming up with the Tarifs that will be applied to China, Mexico etc. coming in January 2025? I am being told it’s going to make importation difficult and super expensive. If this is true, there will be a lot of fish that will no longer be available. COTA and TUIC were main suppliers for pure/ wild caught Central/South American cichlids COTA is out and if you haven’t noticed Kevin TUIC is selling a lot of his breeder Central American cichlids so who do we have that has a stable enough record or reputation to bring them in? And if things are going to be more expensive would they be willing to bring them in hopes to make a profit?

I DONT WANT THIS TO TURN INTO SOME WEIRD POLITICAL BS just trying to understand if there will be any effects or none.

If I understand correctly, the tariffs relate to manufactured goods imported into the US. Cars, electronics, etc. The goal is to bring offshore production & jobs back to the US, and the level the playing field as it relates to cost to manufactured goods produced here in the US.

I don’t believe it will affect live goods imports, but I don’t have all the info either

This happens in both direction, so please do not read this as a one sided political jab...

Fearmongering is a huge weapon in politics these days. And the vast majority of the tools used to generate this fear turn out to be far less of a concern than anticipated. I'd suggest not worrying about it and waiting to see what the reality is when it happens.

Those whose livelihoods are attached to these concerns have likely looked into it more closely but they too likely do not have all the answers.

Correct on the intention, but it will severely impact costs to consumers. Eg. If a car part is manufactured with labour that costs 6 usd offshore, it will likely cost 60 dollars here in the states. How do you think it will impact the cost to consumers? And considering that it will still cost less to
Manufacture abroad than the 25% tariff, I think it will just end up being a tax on consumers.


All that said, the Tariff rhetoric is intended for both manufactured goods, but also lots of raw materials and energy, including stuff we import from Canada ( Tons of Crude oil, Softwood lumber and Energy).

Tariffs won’t be intended to target the aquarium trade, but some things might get caught up, including all the mass manufactured Glass tanks from
Big box stores, Filters and heaters etc.

It will just create a new excuse for price gouging too because how can anyone prove that your costs have or haven’t gone up and by how much. It will be like Covid days all over again. Massive corporate profits and higher cost of living.

This is the type of thinking that the fearmongers want us to have.

Today, things are fine. Live in today.

Its hard to go much farther into this discussion without taking into the direction of a political conversation, which has no place on a fish forum. And even then, it becomes a "what if" debate, discussing what "might" happen and what we should do if our fears or hopes come true.

Many of the Central American countries are realizing the importance and uniqueness of their wild resources, and putting restrictions on their exportation.
Places like Costa Rica and Panama (where I live) are restricting capture and sale of wild life, to only a few individuals.
Here in Panama live native fishes cannot be sold "legally".
