ID? Labeled as “South American Gar” at my LFS. There looks to be two different species, in the last pic you can see it has different markings. What kind of gar are they, and are they even gar at all? Looks like those characins or hujeta possibly but I haven’t kept gar or characins before so I’m not sure. They’re about 3-4”

Yes agree not a true gar specie.

Gotcha. Any difference between the last one and the others species wise? Or just different color pattern

probably a different type of characin. The last picture looks like a boulengerella maculata

you think I could keep the two species together? I wanted to get a gar for my new tank but these seem a little bit more manageable and practical size

Yes shod be fine if sizes are similar. Provide some floating plants and lids for the tank.
