sorry about picking up on you!

@askingan: you should take some picture from the top of the fish, especially the head, that should make it easier to ID!

They were sold to me as spotted... but they might be short nosed. What do you think?

They're most likely either Florida gars or shortnose gars; it's hard to tell with their pattern being so faded.

Did the original owner catch them near you or are they from an LFS?

it's fine that you are trying to help, but at the same time if you don't know for certain or at least have an educated guess, it's best not to post compared to throwing random guesses out there...and if gator gar wasn't a random guess, it was just way off the mark (especially since your two options were extremes on the spectrum, "gator gar" and "needlenose"). check the ID keys first. posting completely inaccurate IDs hurts more than it helps. again, nothing personal, just trying to be efficient with moving along the ID process--

The gars in the photos are shortnose gars.

Wow!.. I was almost sure that's a washed-out Florida.

Further proof that we need to remember to post pics in the ID thread and get a positive ID from you experts before buying any Gar...:)

Also, that Ray is absolutely menacing..

you know, washed our FLG had crossed my mind, and i started to second guess...but there are SNGs that show some spotting on them, but the main extra piece of info is that the OP said they were caught up north...if they mean caught in the wild (which i am assuming is the case) then they would have to be SNG.

it should be mentioned that washed out SNG, SPG, and FLG all look very much alike, so as much info as possible should be included with the pics for ID.--

PS -- we'll know if i'm wrong if the OP ends up changing the substrate or moving them to a tank and they all of a sudden have bright green spots!!!

i bought these 2 yesterday and have no idea what they are. they dont have spots at all except for there tail fin and they are very light in color. it would be nice to know what i have :naughty: . thanks in advance guys
