Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

This gar isn't at the Shedd. I initially thought Longnose but the snout seems to slender and short. I thought it had too much pattern to be a Shortnose and Spotted seemed wrong too. Medius type? Interesting how variable gar can be!

The pattern can be discounted for IDing it at this point; making an ID based on just the pattern is usually a bad choice in most cases.

It definitely could be a shortnose gar; I suspect that it could also be a medius gar since they seem to be popping up more and more. However, I'm still leaning towards it being a longnose gar, with shortnose gar being my second choice and medius gar being my third choice (unlikely, though).

spotted gar? or is it out of range?

I don't think that it's a spotted gar despite the fact that those gars occur where this gar was caught. As for why, the build seems to be off for a spotted gar.

After doing some more reviewing of gar pictures, I'm sticking with longnose gar on this one. This gar seems to be too lightly built to be a shortnose gar plus the snout-to-body ratio looks to be off for a shortnose gar.

From my understanding, Spotted gars range from the Gulf of Mexico up to the great lakes and and even into Canada on some parts of Lake Erie.

looks like a spotted/florida in poor condition. the belly looks sunken in , it might have IPs? or has been starved/starving for awhile.

On a side note...this gar does not have a sunken belly because it has been in my care. He was just caught within the last week. This was the nicest looking one I caught. The course of nature has made it this way. Hopefully I can fatten it up rather quickly. I've read about Spotted gars being very skittish. This one doesn't seem this way at all. Can any members post a picture of their Spotted gar? Thanks!
