I was wondering where did they gold colour come from on the GJD's??? Is it just a colour morph like the EBJD's??? Is this Gold found out in the wild unlike the EBJD's???
I think your right about the EBJD.TrikkyMakk;4115220; said:I am not 100% sure that the EBJD is a morph. I thought I have heard people say it actually occurs naturally. As far as the Gold, it may be the same thing.
I only have one right now I think it is a female. Do you think I would get any males if it breed with my regular JD? So have you breed your GJD's yet?auratum;4115436; said:There is lots of debate on the EBJD's if they came from hybrids or just a gene mutation from regular JD's - so I won't attempt to answer that part of your question.
Gold JD's are just a color form much like an albino would be. Gold JD's are missing some of the dark brown melanin color throughout their body. They still have some tan markings on them at times depending on their mood. I still struggle with whether to call them gold or pink as they have both gold and pink in their bodies. They are a beautiful fish with more subtle colors. I will try to post a picture of mine later tonight. I have 6 adults - 1 female and 5 males. All Gold JD's are believed to be from the same source originally and they breed true (Gold x Gold = Gold) unlike the EBJD which require an outcross to standard JD's and then cross back to EBJD.
If you breed it to a standard JD, all of the fry will look normal, but carry the gold gene. If you then breed the fry together, you should produce 50% gold fry from them.Blankmanrl;4115686; said:I only have one right now I think it is a female. Stunning gold JD. If you bred the gold w/ EBJD would it be the same 50% as with the reg JD? I breed swordtails and I have found that I can get certain color combos with certain colored parents. For example if I breed pine apple w/ orange. I get half the orange color and half the pine apple colored fry. I am selectively breeding these combos. I am interested to see what happens if I breed the same orange/pineapple with each other.auratum;4116473; said:If you breed it to a standard JD, all of the fry will look normal, but carry the gold gene. I have not bred mine yet. My intent is to outcross them to standard JD's as they are all brothers and sister. I have been growing out some standard JD females to breed with the gold males. The plan is to get at least two different strains with the gold gene and then cross them. I am also working on getting more tanks set-up to make space for this.
Here is a picture of my largest male. He is about 8" TL. These fish are very difficult to take pictures of as the color washes out. There is lots of red/pink in the fins and on the belly. The lips and flank are very gold. The color varies greatly depending on mood. When they were younger, at times you could see faint vertical barring like what female JD's show when they are breeding.
There have been a couple people who have bred the Gold to EBJD - the fry look 100% normal, but all carry the gene for both gold and EB. If you cross these fry then you should get a portion that have both genes, but it is like 12.5% theoretically, as both genes are recessive. No one has raised these up to see what they look like when adult. There is a guy selling fry on aquabid from his first batch, but too early to know how the EB will look on the gold back ground.cichlidfish;4116532; said:Stunning gold JD. I actually have one of those gold/ebjd's. I have had it for about a week now and it looks good. You can tell the difference in the EBJD and the Gold/EBJD it is a very nice looking fish. I cant wait for it to get bigger.auratum;4117274; said:There have been a couple people who have bred the Gold to EBJD - the fry look 100% normal, but all carry the gene for both gold and EB.
