Hey Tanker, Im building a tank too, yours is a frickin monster of monsters, mines a 135.
i used bondo for the inside. www.garf.org is a great reference point for tank building, they have all kinds of calculators and years of diy experience.

looks great, lots of people talk about buiding a tank, not to many of us actually get off our ass and do it. It also takes balls to show the world what your doing, cause it could end up to be a big ugly turd like mine.

Here is another formula to figure gallons:

Measure your tank in inches, Length x Height x Width X 0.00433 = gallons

72 x 48 x 36 x 0.00433 = 538.7 gallons.

Islander671 had it right, Good luck.

Sorry brother, my last reply never made it. I've built several wooden tanks. 100 to 300 gal If you need help drop me a line. There is no safe material you can use to water proof your wood , all will kill your fish. The only method is to line the tank with fiberglass, or a plastci liner (not as good). I can show you the way. Use only MArine grade plywood.......SEMPER FI!!!!!!!

ok, just got all the wood. im gonna start building, my next question is. what did u guys use to paint the plywood to make it water proof, and where can i get it. 2nd question what did u do at the spot where two pices of plywood meet (the corners) did u use silcone sealent or what. thanks for the help
This will be my fifth time trying to reply. Long time no chat brother, I worked with several guys and have built a few wooden tanks. There is no material on the market you can buy that will water proof your tank and not kill your fish. I've use liner but the best results came from lining the wooden tank with fiberglass. I can show you how and guild you thru it. Drop me a line...SEMPER FI....

Guesswho,

I'd love to build a big tank. I'm contemplating fiberglassing all corners and using a spray-on truck bed liner like rhino liner. Have you opinions on this? Thanks.

Hope this one makes it. Long time no chat Brother......I.ve worked on several tanks to include wooden one....Drop me a line and i can help you get started in the right directions. I would consider using fiberglass as the liner , Its stronger then steel and flexible with wooden frames. NO product on the market to day will water prrof your tank (Long Term) without bleeding into the water and killing your fish over time.

i dont know if this is at all feasible, but what about rubberising the inside so that its completely water proof aswell as using aquarium silicon to seal the joints before rubberising the wood

so do tanks of this size need to be placed on concrete pads or would they be ok on the second story bedroom floor of a house? That is a lot of weight in a samll area of floor space.
