it can be done. depends on your mix of africans, size and water params.

I really dont suggest it as most puffers require a brackish water set up after a few months and Cichlids classically are a pure fresh water fish

Who told you that? Even though they are found in freshwater as juveniles, green spotted puffers need full strength saltwater as adults. And even if you get a juvenile to put in with your cichlids, my guess is that the cichlids will kill it.

I tried it once with bad results. The cichlids were so fast and aggressive at feeding time that the puffer did not get to eat. He was on his way to starving to death when I took back to the LFS

GSPs need full marine when they reach maturity. These fish can live 15 or more years if taken care of properly. If not in full marine they will not live that long. They also don't tolerate tank mates to well. They are notorious fin nippers and when they reach adults they are down right nasty. IMO you should not mix them.

You can use salt (not table salt) with your cichlids. It can actually beneficial to control agression and aids in healing.

but as much salt as a brackish tank requires? the LFS told me that i needed about 2 tablespoons per gallon and the puff would be fine to full maturity like that but i also have always read that green spotted puffs need full salt in order to reach optimum life expectancy.
