Gymnogeophagus Terrapurpura Growout!

2 dozen fry (if that much) left. I’m going to take this as a learning experience. I wont be able to sell to stores, but casually to MFKers, hell yeah.

I’ve been feeding 3 times a day, and the parents are doing a splendid job raising them. The other gymnos in the tank are confined to a couple square inch spaces, and they will occasionally take a swipe at the fry.

Congrats, sounding good. Breeding in an outdoor tank is a bit less controlled than in your home. I have cichlids in stock tanks in the yard and they might as well be in the local creek for all the control I have over them. At least yours are in a tank and somewhat more easily observed and managed. I lose a lot of fry to predaceous aquatic insects; you probably do also, to a lesser extent.

If you get a couple dozen fry to saleable size, that's still plenty to approach your LFS with to set up a trade-in. You'll likely be offered strictly credit towards other purchases. I think you will find this far, far easier and more convenient, i.e. bringing one cooler of fish in on one occasion to one location, rather than shipping them out in dribs and drabs to individual hobbyists...or having all those folks come traipsing down to your house to pick them up.

Plus, if you bring in a couple dozen fish of a desirable species that will likely sell quickly...you'll start to build up a relationship with that shop for future transactions. I mean...I'm sure they know you now already...but I won't comment on what they might be thinking when they see you coming in now.

Once you become a semi-regular supplier to them...they might actually be happy to see you... :)

Unfortunately for him, SD is a very cheap county. He'll probably get at most 20% in store credit per fish for what the store can get from their local supplier, no matter what size he brings them in (even if larger than the supplier). Not too many folks looking for gymnos (their loss really since many don't know that they can be kept outdoors year long) or unheated tanks.

Well, that's not great; I'm accustomed to my LFS crediting me between 40% and 50% of what the fish will retail for.

You still need to put a dollar figure on the cost, materials and inconvenience of shipping and/or selling to pick-up buyers. I can imagine the Shadow's parents pulling their hair out dealing with drop-ins while he is out playing soccer or surferdude-ing or whatever...:)

Nice.. mine has spawned 4 times since May. I've pulled fry twice.. the other 2 times the fry were gobbled up in a week..

All we’re eaten and only have a dozen left. I don’t want to pull the other Gymnos, but I have nowhere to put them.

Can you set up a 10 or 20 gallon w/ a sponge filter from the main tank for the fry? then you can start pulling the fry from the next batch if the goal is to grow out and sell...

also may be more profitable selling in local fish clubs and local FB groups.. just post good pics of the parents..

I originally had a system I was going to use, but it was squashed by my neighbors ‘gifting’ me a goldfish. I had nowhere to put it, and didn’t want to give it to the LFS, so I put it in my second patio pond temporarily until my pond is setup. My original plan was fry split between 2 10 gallon clear plastic tubs. Once they reach a certain size, I would move them into some other container. Once they reach a larger size, I would move them into my second patio pond. After I got the goldfish, I decided it would be easier and benefit the parents if the fry were theirs to keep and defend. Parenting experience is what I was looking for. Next year, when my pond is dug and I can buy a couple small tanks, I’ll do that.

I also tried the flu Al box hooked onto my 90g, but I ended up loosing 30 or so fish because the holes were big enough for them to wiggle through and into my tank. I managed to suck a couple out, and save the rest that hadn’t found the hole, but I still lost about 30.
