but what happens to the crap when i stop using wool? they'll clog the bioballs wont they?? oh yeah i removed the frt. yet the cuban is still dark coloured:(

don't worry about "the crap" it will be fine. keep using wool (a small amount) as a prefilter and you'll be fine. and although the Cuban can change color rapidly, it will likely be a gradual process of recovery for yours since it's been exposed to quite a bit of ammo-tox and who knows what else for the past several days. be patient--

nitrates were reduced from 130 to 70, i know it's still high, which is why i increased water changes to 40% every 2 days, with 10% extra between large changes. the cuban is taking this well. havent measured it recently thou

two things:

1 - i would measure your water parameters recently. historical measurements may help, but they are useless if you don't know what your present parameters are.

2 - nitrates really won't affect gars (and many other fishes). the main issues are with nitrites, ammonia, and pH fluctuation with gars (especially the Cuban). if i were you i would look up some basic info on the Nitrogen cycle to better familiarize yourself with the biochemistry of an aquarium.--
