If you get carried away, it wouldn't be a good thing. I usually let my guy call the shots. If I have a pellet in my hand and he just wants to rub against my hand, then I get rid of the pellet and give him a pet on the nose and under the chin. Sometimes if I cup my hand, he will sit in it for a little while and then I will give him a gentle rub under the belly.

I think he likes the interaction. He's in our living room/dining room and at certain times of the day he faces the front of his tank and watches us. Then he moves around more and that's when I take my cue from him. It's kind of routine and is usually in the early evening. I'm only 5'2" so I have to get a chair to reach down into his tank, and when he sees the chair coming, he gets more active. It's pretty awesome and it sure shows that he thinks and has feelings.

Just take your time, zfoster. Don't hurry your fish. Be gentle and you will actually teach your fish to be gentle and to trust you. ;) Trust, once truly earned, is an amazing and far reaching tool.

As for being 5'2"...LOL back at ya'...I'm a female in law enforcement and some of the youth that I have worked with were my height when I met them and now they are 6'2" so we have a good laugh when we bump into each other. :grinno: Having said that, I wish some of the kids I work with had the opportunity to learn about loving animals... especially an animal like a monster fish that is really another living being that needs to be safe and confident in their surroundings.

I have a monster dog too; a Bullmastiff. He is a gentle giant and I use him as a therapy dog with violent and/or abused kids. In my opinion, you are in correspondence with lots of different kinds of people in this thread and you will learn a lot from them...the bottom line being...kindness to all.

Thanks for responding to my post, zfoster...maybe you can start a youth post. :) I think there may be a lot of youth on this thread, and I'm sure from what I've observed, there are also a lot of us that would appreciate being able to support youth as they come into this hobby.
