Hardiest Anubias with a Severum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha, yeah they definitely love their greens. Hopefully the lettuce helps deter the plant munching. Anubias are one of my favorite plants. But I could never get rid of my sev so that tank I've pretty much resigned to not having beautiful looking plants. Luckily my 75 gallon has lots of Anubias that are doing wonderfully.

Nice sev and tank by the way. :-)

Yeah it will be tough to sell the severum. Only fish who lets me pet it. My 2nd option is too cycle the 125 with the anubias in there with the hopes that they will grow firmer and the sev may leave it alone.

Just be aware that if you see something labeled "Anubias barteri var. nana" or "Anubias barteri var. nana 'petite'" those are not the same barteri. What you're looking for is Anubias barteri var. barteri.

Yep, anubias barteri var. barteri is a type that does well underwater and can grow huge. Many other large anubias do not do well fully submerged..

If the tank is large, try to find crinum calamistratum. It's grows tin long curly leaves and fish really don't like eating it....a beatiful plant and also extremely hardy...

Here is a picture of my barteri var. barteri.

Nice plant..so I purchased anubias congensis and minima (large pieces). Do you know if these will grow well fully submerged? I also have barteri var. Barteri.

Have you thought of emersed tropical plants? Is the tank covered?

I posted this picture of one of my previous tanks recently on another thread. You can plant emersed plants in pots with substrate like hydrotone clay pebbles or mixture with pebbles, soil and gravel. The fish won't be able to access any part of the plant but the plant roots will be inside the water using up all that's available to them. These type of plants have unlimited access to CO2 and as such are pure mops of nitrogen, dissolved metals and other toxins that do not go well with fish. The tank is not the best example you'll see because I am lazy but it gives the idea..It is a great way of keeping healthy water for larger messy fish that eat underwater plants :)
