Home Depot Sump Pumps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For a 300 gallon tank, I would recommend the Supreme Hybrid pump lineup. They are submersible, rated for saltwater or fresh water. I have three of them in my 180 gal sump for my 535 gal tank. You can see them on the Foster & smith web site. They are pretty darn quiet and work very well.

Quiet One, RioHyperflow and Eheim. All great, to name a few, all silent or very close. Those HomeDepot jobs are for intermittant pumping and arent designed for continuous use...and they are loud. I have one I used to pump the low spot in the back yard when it flooded.(we have since landscaped so I dont need it anymore). The pump also sucked up everything.

I actually have 3 of these EXACT pumps in my ponds that are at my house. They have been running 24/7 for over 3 years straight now with out a problem. I NEVER had one burn up, the good thing with those pumps is that if you have a problem with it you can take it back and get a brand new one since its home deopt. The heat shouldn't be too much of an issue depending on tank size and if you have a chiller. I have used the home depot pump to brew live rock in my garage and the water never got over 80 degrees. The only problem I can think of is that when these pumps are new they put off a oily film that looks like a rainbow on the surface of the water. If you use carbon it would take it out immediately as it don't hurt fish, just an eye sore if you see it.

I'm always amused when someone's personal experience suggests the opposite of what "the rumor" of a product is...

I would contact the manufacturer and see what they have to say about constant use... this may also be in the pumps literature...

There are a number of quality aquarium pumps. A few years ago I bought several SEN pumps (from Kensfish.com) and I am extremely happy with them. They deal with head pressure at comparible output as major brands but are much less effected by sand/particles. They were slightly less expensive than the more popular alternatives.

I've used several of Danner's Mag Drive pumps in the past. They were great pumps in efvery aspect other than it seemed the least bit of sand brought them to a grinding hault.

If you are referring to me I am giving the guy my info on these pumps from my personal experience just like he asked for. He asked for opinions, suggestions, and advise so that I did. No need to call manufacture it states in the owner manual "for consistent use of pump, water level of 12" or more must be constant at all time. Failure to do so may result in product failure"...I can actually upload the owner's manual off my scanner and show you the section where it clearly states that the pump CAN be used full time. There is even a diagram showing how to place the pump for pond use. What ever pump he wants to use is totally up to him. They will both be close in price, the submersible will have a lot more head loss. My mag 18 is probably twice as loud as my home depot pump if not louder. My home deopt pumps are quiet. I use mag pumps for my return just because the home depot pumps are so big. For each his own im just giving this guy all the information I know about this product so he can make an accurate decision when he decides which route he wants to go.
