I think surviving and thriving are two very different things. The oscars my survive without a heater, but doubt they'd thrive without a heater. My two cents.
On a slightly related point, the Mrs. keeps a heater running on her fancy goldfish tank to cope with the fluctuations in temperature, and I have to say they seem a damn sight healthier and impressive since its been running.

Yeah, because temperatures never fluctuate in the wild or anything... even just swimming from the shallows to a deeper part of the water the temperature can fluctuate more than 10 degrees.

This is a good point, but it depends on the climate and body of water. A lake that is tepid will have that kind of temperature deliniation.

A stream or pool in a tributary might not. neither should an aquarium.

Also in the wild a fish has the freedom to seek the temperature it desires, it does not have that luxury in a glass box in your house

I'm not saying there isn't, just saying I doubt the fluctuations on a massive body of water are as drastic as a meer few hundred litres. Surely?
And very true on the weather front, I'm sure I could survive in the north pole, I just wouldnt enjoy it one bit!

Wow, I can't believe this thread is still going!

Honestly, if you say your temps in your house don't fluctuate but a few degrees, then go ahead and don't use any heaters(it's your tank and fish). But all it's takes is a couple hours of no heat in your house during winter for your fish to end up dead.

I usually cut off my heaters in the summer(but leave them in tank, just in case there's a "cold summer day"), because imo there's no use for them. My tanks maintain a good temp throughout the summer without them. My apartment stays pretty warm in the winter also, but I won't take the chance not using heaters then. I believe that fluctuation in the tank by a few degrees is ok, as long as it's gradual.

Ugh. Someone just tell him he doesn't need a heater already. That's the only thing he'll pay attention to.

Does anyone know how to speed up my pitbulls neck wound?
I'd really like him to make the fight next weekend
I've reduced his training cause it keeps opening the gash

the "wild" for an oscar is the Amazon Basin. Just because the air temperature fluctuates a few degrees there, doesnt mean the water temperature does.

you are a smart, smart man. :grinno:

It's not a matter of survival, it's a matter of comfort.
You can survive in Wisconson
but what a miserable, miserable life it must be

They don't live in 70degree temps.
Don't keep them in these temps just because it won't kill them.
You want us to tell you it won't kill them so you don't feel bad.
It won't kill them. Don't do it.

they dont live at that temp, no?? not at all, never??? from research i have done it said mid 70's (76 to be exact) was a nice temp for them......there floating in temps pretty close to that

sence is starting to come back......

even when i ran my heater, the temp would fluctuate a few degrees thru out the day. :WHOA:

im sorry i dont feed my fish with a golden spoon like some of yall. i hope they atleast taste good, fried or baked??

You also have to take into consideration that your temps right now are 74-76 degrees, but when it gets colder out will they stay like that? Imo anything less than what you currently have your oscar at will not be too healthy! And I don't know about where your at, but the swings in temp during winter are much more drastic than those of the summer here. It can be 50 on a sunny day, and 20 and cloudy the next.
