around here a oscar around 9 inches usually isnt taken in by a lfs because they are too hard to sell and who wants to pay for a fish you can go on craigslist and get for free from someone who doesnt want it anymore.

Maybe some rinky dink guppy shop, but no real fish store would have any trouble housing or selling a big oscar. They sell themselves.

Those free craigslist oscars are usually farm bred and in bad shape. A healthy wild bred specimen is a completely different story.

LFS, if they take them, would likely give you nothing to $20 for a big oscar.

Matt

Fish stores pay worse than pawn shops, theyre irrelevant to market value. Lets keep this thread on track, which is the worth of the largest young wild caught Oscar in captivity.

The owner of this fish would have a possible record setting oscar, and serious status and bragging rights in the fshkeeper community. Noot to mention he has even more upside at only two years old.

If having the biggest and best specimen of the most popular fish on the planet is only worth 20 dollars to you, mister I pity you.

I dont feel like reading all this junk about oscars but how do we know the true size of this fish? Theres no real proof of its size. I had a lady offer me a 13 inch oscar the other day for my 6 inch synodontis catfish. I told her no then sold the catfish to another guy for $15. I'm sure the OP will say hes too big to measure and thats crap because I used to take my 21 inch pacu out of the tank and measure him. this thread is crap and so is the size claim. Do i hate oscars "NO", but after being in this hobby for so long ive learned like many people that oscars arent worth keeping as there are far better and more interesting fish. I've kept 3 oscars and got bored with them.

Because OM said it was the biggest and the bestest oscar in da wwwwwwwwwwoooooooooorrrlllld. And if he (if you are female no offense) says it is it is. The rest of us are waiting for the response.

Did not say so before but I also find the size, age, and wild caught claim suspect. I like O's and have had many. I have only personally witnessed one in that size range (sold for $75). I personally believe that an O that size is much more likely to be from Florida or tank raised. My opinion is that truly wild caught O's would be genetically predisposed to growing slower and being smaller, because of how the native stock would have evolved to deal with the resource pressures of their natural habitat.

Oscarum monstruoso you dont even know if the claims are true. Theres no proof at all. Not to mention the video is only 12 secs long and the man behind the camera doesnt zoom out to show the tank because this is probly at an aquarium and the fish isnt his. I can go on the internet and find a video most people havent seen and say its mine. Stop computer fighting with everyone and get some proof that this fish is the largets in the worl instead of taking someones word for it....

You guys are really reaching now. We've established the worth of this fish according to the numbers that were provided. If the op was dishonest (which there is no reason to suspect), that does not change the fact that a two year old wild caught 18" oscar is rare and valuable. Disliking oscars is your prerogative, but questioning the thread starters honesty is a cheap shot imho.
