I'm Where I'm At
need a side shot,.............. if the tail fin starts off black at the tail and gets lighter and white at the tip it's a scomb,............ if it get starts light and goes dark at the tip then it's tat or armatus,............. doesn't look like raph to me,......... but the pics are not good enough to be sure, need a good side shot

that's my 2 cents

I've had all 4 of the Payara species.

I'm sticking with Armatus.

Give it a month then tell me what I've won.....LOL. If you are going to ID off fin coloration give it a few months. By then you should be able to ID by adipose. Take it from someone who HAS had small Armatus... The only way to tell when so young is the size of the tail and cadual fin in relation to overall body size.

Congrats man!!!!!

A side profile shot is needed for 100% ID but my guess is that its a Ralph
xander13;2796717; said:
yeah dude get a side shot, and i agree it looks like ralph from tht angle
i can tell you its DEFINITELY not a raph and DEFINITELY one of the true hydrolycus.
my pics just suck.
will disturb him to get a profile shot....keeps staying around the same area.
plus hes in my filter compartment....hard to get good pics.

Tail looks huge.... VERY good sign. (Armatus)

Better pics and you should be able to tell.

I'll have to dig but I think I still have some pics of my Armatus at like 2 inches.... The tails and cadual fins stood out as being pretty big compared to the rest of the fish.
this guy looks different from baby armatus...cause he had those spots under the pectoral fins like scombs do.
do the other species have this when theyre tiny?
my tat has it,but its not really the classic "scomp-type" spot.
but yea...the tail is what stood out.
