The Land where Fish Rule!
As the title says i forgot to put dechlorinator in the tank I just setup for my baby peacock bass. They were in the water for 6 1/2 hours before I relized it and finally put it in. They didn't seem to be stressed to much (they were alittle from being in shipping transport for past day) so I didn't really sense anything was wrong. In all my years of fish keeping I have never done this before. Please tell me they are going to be ok. Also if there is anything else I should do and are there any long term effects of this (like stunted growth)? I dont think it was to bad becuase they are now and actually always were acting normal. I just want them to be ok. Thanks for any help!

EDIT* The tank is 20 gal and was newly set up so they were in 20 gal of chlorinated water, the filter was already established though, but not anymore I guess

You will know in a few days if they didn't show signs of stress from the water right away. Sometimes, that small amount of stress will cause them to get ich or velvet in a few days. You have to watch them closely. Good Luck.

Wait you say tank is 20 gallons with 20 gallons of chlorinated water with a established filter? Wouldn't all that chlorine start killing off all your BB? I would test your water to see what your levels are at for the next few days.

If it was running for a few days, I'd say most of the chlorine likely evaporated.

If you have chloramine in your water, it wouldn't have evaporated.

Either way, you probably just killed off all of your BB and won't have a bio filter that works for a while. Like was said, monitor and check water parameters very frequently. Act accordingly to whatever results you are seeing.

tsk tsk tsk. I guess it will be ok.

it happens, if u have another establishd tank do yourself a favor and replace some seeded media, shouldnt miss too much of a beat

The fish should be ok, but keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite as there is a good chance you seriously damaged your biofilter. If you've got a seeded filter or media from another tank I'd go ahead and transfer media.

Ok guys thanks the tank was just setup so the water had no time for the chlorine to evaporate. I have multiple other tanks I can switch media with so thats not a problem and Ill do the water test to make sure everything is safe. I am more worried about the actual fish and any effects it will have on them. They seem perfectly fine and you cant even tell that anything went wrong. They are only 1.5 inch long and there is 3 of them so the bio load isnt very big yet.

Edit* I just remebered that I once read a paper that actually proved that chlorinatied water can not kill the bacteria unless the chlorine is in a very high quantity like what they use at the treatment plants... either way i am not taking a chance and ill switch the media
