I Got My Freshwater Bumble Bee Grouper!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That thing is BAD man. Groupers are pretty cool, I had a louti grouper that was so pretty and mean it was a fun fish . if i had the tank needed to keep him to adult size i probably would have, but they get HUGE man. most get pretty mean too. keep us all posted on his behavior, and let us know WHEN he eats the poor lizard fish. they can fit some huge stuff in that mouth.

ui dont nothing about lizard fish. but if you decide to get rid of it li i will take it off your hands! So what are you gonna get rid of to downsize the collection anyways.

I don't really believe in the evolution happening overnight. Evolution is a long, slow process that sometimes increases in speed with mutations.

I think with this grouper (and I mean the species as a whole rather than the individual) they are just more adaptable to water parameters than most fish.

I would be more interested in the PH that the grouper is being kept in. I think most fish can tolerate higher/lower degrees of salinity, but have a harder time with regards to Ph. Freshwater-Saltwater is a large range, but there are many, many species that are full one way or the other, and seem to do fine either way.

I am surprised no one pointed out the shark (can't remember if it was the tiger shark or a great white) that swam up the mississippi river and killed a few people over the course of a couple of months. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but a fish that is 'stressed' wouldn't be feeding. For those of you who want to research it, I believe it happened between the 1920's - 1950's. Not sure exactly when, but I am sure it is on the net.

It would be interesting to see if that grouper does survive lets say, 1 year. Please post pics after one year Fugpuff. I don't doubt that this species can survive in FW, but lets see how WELL it survives in FW over time. I am really curious to see..Please don't feed it goldfish - feeding goldfish to marine fish really kills em fast (as you probably know) and I doubt that it would change if you are keeping it in FW and feeding it Goldfish. Keep'em alive! When I get my pond up, I will try to duplicate what you are doing, IF you keep yours' healthy! Good luck, and keep us updated!

Bull sharks have been known to swim all the way up to St Louis...i believe

Someone mentioned tarpon as an example...another bad example, Tarpon have close cousins(other shad-like fish) that are completely freshwater.

There are many sharks that enter estuary and freshwater, including, but not limited to bull sharks, and some of the fish in Glyphus genus are landlocked in complete fresh. Like I said, as long as its at their "own will" they don't die, once you add additional "stress", it kills them. I use these terms in quotation marks loosely, to avoid any conflicting ideas you might conjure up in your head. Look at this post above, It FN happend, where is tito? hmmm

Nah, tarpons is a good example. Scats have no freshwater counterparts, neither does terapon jarbua, which have both been kept in pure freshwater....

I've thought about Ph also. The one Neo has is kept in complete different parameters as mine, we'll share notes and compare soon. But its not just ph, again, its another parameter that fish can tolerate as long as its their willingness and gradual, and not the extremes. People say discus need low ph, many breeders do well with them in tap water, hard and ph value of 7.5 or more. I've kept Tanganiykan cichlids, water paremeter normally 7.5-8.2, at low Ph, and they even breed, parameter around 6.2 ph. What do you think?
