I'm not that clumsy!

.and of course when dealing with monster fish we can't simply ignore the possible impact of a spooked fish weighing a few or more pounds smashing into the glass at high speed
BAH HAHAHAJA! What a goof ball!
BTW, leak test for the Chicago was dry.
Inside dimenensions:
150" long
42.5" tall
31.5" depth

Outside dimensions:
12' 10" long
46" tall
34.5 depth (front to back)

I just caught this thread and your build is impressive, but after reading through the whole thread I can’t help but wonder.
Did you come here to share in the community seeking zero feedback? Or, are you just trolling for the first person that has a different opinion so you can argue in a condescending manner?

@Parka ! Buddy!!! Great to see you back; how I've missed you! I can just picture you toiling away in that basement all this time, sucking up those glass fibres and epoxy fumes...labouring towards that all-important "I told you so!" that danced in your head...

Thanks for starting right in by name-calling; I'll try not to return the favour. I appreciate you quoting me in your latest post to draw my attention back into this wonderful thread.

Despite not giving a rat's anus about your impending problems...or existing personality issues...your unique brand of abrasive condescension actually prompted me to plug your numbers into one of the calculators so easily available. You know...the ones that you apparently never bothered to check yourself. I guesstimated that the critical dimension of water-surface-to-bottom-of-window in your tank, based on your actual interior measurement, is likely about 38 inches?

Surprise! Plugging that number, along with your other measurements and specifying 1/2-inch glass, into the first calculator I used shows that using 1/2-inch glass in your tank yields a Safety Factor of almost exactly...one!

A Safety Factor of one...in an application where the most commonly-targeted Safety Factor is 3.8 - 4.

I recall that, while not bothering to personally consult any of the easily available on-line calculators for glass thickness in your own build, you also avoided the unpleasant drudgery of even learning what a Safety Factor is, so perhaps you are simply choosing to test that wonderful old adage "Ignorance is bliss". More power to ya!

I also grant that a piece of glass in a plywood build, supported on all sides, gives you a bit more leeway than an all-glass build held together strictly by the silicone adhesion. And the centre vertical brace separating the two individual pieces of window glass injects further structural factors that are way beyond my ability to fully analyze. But...one??? When the generally accepted factor is four??? Wow.

But it holds water, so...I guess you showed me! Keep us posted!

After seeing the finished product i can see that you cut out a lot of the height on the viewing windows--maybe 4-5" on top and bottom for a total window height of 32-36" maybe??? I still think youre too tall, man. I wouldnt be able to sleep with it all the way full. Also id be concerned about the middle seam bowing out over time in the front if you didnt add more framing/reinforcement in there.

But big time props for your ambition and confidence. That will be an absolutely awesome paludarium if filled up 60-70%.

Last seen Oct 6th last year, being extremely rude. Turns up today, some 5 months or so later, and in his first sentence is extremely rude again!

I would have hoped during his 5 month absence that he might have done a bit of work on his communication skills, obviously not!

I've no time for you buddy, or your build, and with a bit of luck @jjohnwm is right, and your tank will splat all over the floor. Me and John like a good laugh.

Over and out!

By the way John, if it does go disastrously tits up, tag me, because I sure as hell won't be following this thread any longer. What a todger!!

@esoxlucius , I'm forced to admit that this thread, combined with your comment about not following it, has made me learn how to "un-watch" an individual thread. So, if there is indeed a "splat", I won't know about it and won't be able to alert you.

And, to be clear, I'm not hoping that it happens...but the tank is in an unfinished basement, and likely won't cause any major damage, so...I doubt I will shed a tear either.

Option 2.

Kudos to you! Amazing build done from your wheelchair. Quite a bit of ingenuity using your wheelchair and another chair to tip it in place. Surely, you had some help moving the tank and placing the glass? We used an engine hoist to lift and move our tank on its stand and a pallet jack to move the tank and stand around.

Wishing you well with your project.
