yeah i have been studing getting a octo for over a year now. he can eat anything in there that makes him happy lol..
Now that i got that tank all setup i am going to be focusing ALL my attention to getting the big tank setup and running, I talked to a guy at a fishstore who said he could probly get me a black arowana for it. so i am excited about that. Just wondering, how much should i expect to pay for a black aro, 6"-8"?

Not much at all. Near me they would sell for an easy 200 bucks at that siz. Near you, maybe 30-40?
Arowana's grow 3 feet in most aquaria. They need a minimum of 8ftx4ft as a footprint at that size.

i got a question for your plywood tank, when you drill into the thickness of the plywood to connect your base to the side panels, won't the thickness part split? the 3/4 inch thickness? i asked the home depot guys and they said it would split.

no new pics so far, since all i have got done is install bulkheads, i have been working on my octopus tank which its new resident is suppose to be here thursday. anyways i do have several questions, because i have for time/money reasons made my mind up to keep this tank freshwater, i have several questions i am hoping to get some help on since i have never kept freshwater fish before, EVER!...
1) I want to have plants in the tank, maybe not to many but some, will they grow in a gravel substate? somthing similar to river rocks? or do i need small rocks like the small colored gravel substate stuff?

2) I want a arowana or 3. I really like the look of the blacks, but i have no idea where to purchase anything like that. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

3) This is from my experience with salt water but why do people not use protein skimmers on freshwater tanks? Why do people not use deep sand beds to convert nitrite into nitrates? Does anaerobic bacteria not grow in freshwater? If it does then why can it not be housed like in saltwater with rock and whatnot?

4) What should i put in this tank besides a couple of arowanas?
For Substrate I'd try and look for some dark colored pool filter sand. plants root well in it but its not so fine that it compacts. You might try some low light plants. You'll have to search around I was thinking of them myself but you have to prune them on occasion so they don't look bad. your best bet would be plastic plants in the substrate and some floating water lettuce. Its easy to pull them out when there gets to be to many and it will help keep Nitrates down.

Looking for the same Fish as you. I contacted the owner of East Coast Zoological Supply. On the Water Wolves Buy/Sell forums ( tried to post the link but apparently I'm supposed to) He can get Black Arowana's in December when they are in season since almost all Blacks are wild caught. Stay away from the fish stores that sell the young arowana with the yolk sacs still on them. This means they were stripped from the fathers mouth way to young and the chances of them surviving are very low. Juvi Arowana don't leave the father until their yolk sacs are absorbed. The price he gave me was $150 for a 6" fish. I've read some very posotive feedback about this seller and I've noticed a lot of people saying that he's even supprised them by giving them free fish on top of what they ordered. As far as tankmates I'm going to go with Oscars, possibly some gars, Lima shovelnose catfish, possible 1 or 2 Freshwater stingrays, and a Pleco. Hope I helped out.
