Isn't "Royal" just a marketing gimmick more than anything else? I mean Andinoacara Rivulatus is an Andinoacara Rivulatus is an Andinoacara Rivulatus.

Probably, the guy at the LFS said "royals" are bred for enhanced coloration. Not sure if he's BS'ing or he's right. But I will say I did have a green terror in the past that was a lot more "grey/whiteish"...

It's a nice looking fish for sure. If I had to guess it's a male. Some species are line bred for certain characteristics. Some people will mix fish from different catch locations in order to get a certain trait of the fish enhanced and then give their "line" some made up nonsense name like Royal or Diablo or whatever bull they decide to make up. And some people would consider that a hybrid. I think you just have a nice Rivulatus.

This is how i understand it - there are certain GTs, almost always males that are labelled "show quality" while others appear very drab and boring. Originating in Asia, these "show quality" fish are marketed as "Royal", having something to do w/ the Feng shui of it's hump and the luck that it brings the owner, along the same line of folklore as Flowerhorns.

As far as sex is concerned it looks like it could go either way, the slope of the head says "female" but pattern and coloration appears to look male. How big is it?

Looks like a nice green terror to me
My guess is def male
Long trailers and slim long body makes me guess that

Most defiantly a male rivulatus.

Even if we were calling Asian green terrors royal, which I'm not implying this is, you wouldn't know unless you bought it from the source. Everyone loves throwing names on fish.

I sure do wish we could all collaborate and find good sources of rivulatus though and their origins. There's so many crappy lines, here in america at least. I always wonder where the good ones came from when I see them.
