Is this a royal green terror?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He's about 5 inches.

Thanks for all the response guys. I actually made a post on the marketplace to see if anyone would buy him in the NJ area, but these responses are making me want to keep him.

He's in a 55 with a red spotted gold severum, and he OCCASIONALLY gives the severum a little chase. Nothing serious, no fin nips, lip locking or anything really. Just slight chases sometimes. I really want to grow my severum into a big fatty so I don't want him to die from stress. Probably better to rehome the GT? or do you think they will get along.

The severum is about 4 inches.

you're going to need a much bigger tank for just the Severum alone, much less housed w/ a GT. I would go 75g at least but 90g or 120g would be better

I think it's just a really nice A. Rivulatus. There's no such thing as "Royal" or "Peasant" GT's as far as I know.

But I especially like the thick seam of orange on the caudal fin. I just bought 5 x 3" GT's and none of them have a seam that thick. There are 1 or 2 that have similar colour seams, but not that thick.

I'd keep the GT if it were me, but to each their own. I've had some Severums in the past that I wished I had held onto as well.

I am not certain it is a male. Dominant female can be as colorful as male. I bred and raised many GTs, and still have been fooled many times picking out the brightest fish in a batch thinking it were a male, until one day she turned dark and dropped the egg tube. GT are not easy to sex until they get quite large, or pair up.

Admin should put a sticky on how to sex GT which comes up every week.

For those interested in Asian strain GTs, Jersey Flowerhorn has brought in some last month. I have seen them in person and they are gorgeous, but not cheap. Here are the pics I uploaded from its facebook.

What is a royal green terror? I have been in the game a long time and have never heard of her royal but I do feel fairly certain that is a female. The unfortunate thing when people attribute new names to old fish it creates confusion to the buyer and ends up costing them more money. And in the long run we find the original bloodlines are the ones most sought-after and desirable.

I'm going with Male.
Not that I know how to sex these but here our some observations I have made in the last couple of months that I've been reading up on these guys;

1. Genitalia: if you zoom in on the 2nd and 4th photos posted by the OP, you can see a very small, very pointy, tube - and it's pointed straight back at the anal fin as well.

2. Very obvious waves of colour (spangles) in the dorsal fin.

3. Very bright spangles on the sides of the fish that are very obvious anterior of the bar that appears is forward of the spot.

In all the YouTube videos and photos I've checked out in the last two months, including photos/videos from Stanzzzz7 and Andy woods cichlids uk, the Males always had all 3 of these traits and the females never had all 3 of these traits.

Again, this is coming from someone who has only owned GT's for 4 days and never spawned them. So take it for what it's worth LOL!

It looks female to me because the slope of the head is too mild to be a male. At 5 inch, the fish is sexually mature and male should begin to develop a small hump. Male GT get bigger, steeper head profile, and longer fin length and the difference increase and become obvious with age. Color is determined by dominance and mood and cannot be used reliably to sex young GT. There is no sexual dimorphism in GT by color or markings and this is why it's so hard to sex young GT.

I disagree, my male never developed a head hump until it hit 9 inches, even then it was very slight. My females had bigger humps than my male did.
If there are no other males around or the fish is sub dominant it probably won't get a hump.
A mature male is normally a lighter brighter blue than females and normally a little more elongated.
Fin extensions can vary depending on genetics. You can even see the pointed male sex organ if you zoom in.
I'm ready to be proven wrong but the op's fish screams male to me.
