Found a small hole. My fly river turtle beat up my hystrix stingray. Stingray got moved to the gar grow-out tank meaning I had to shift some driftwood to cover up the heater so the ray didn't burn itself... long story short the driftwood was high and left a considerable gape in the back. Chalk this one up to experience.

the jumping really isn't species-specific with gars...if you have a fish in a tank, be prepared for the possibility of it jumping out. period.

gars are good jumpers, so they may warrant more attention. tape will work if you have glass tops and tape the corners down (i do this on my 120g). on my larger gar tank i have an entire old bed frame on top of the tank (collapsed into two rows)...this gives appropriate weight and weight distribution so the gars can knock off the tops. gars are quite strong, make sure you have heavy tops and something to weigh them down that will not damage the entire tank if it's knocked off.

good thing is that since they breathe air, they have a bit more of a fighting chance if the gar jumps out while you're gone!--

That I am very surprised that jump. That I have no idea. Thank you for the information!

One of my tropicals has made the big jump since this thread, luckily my cat discovered it for me and I was able to toss it back it while it was still damp. This was about a month ago - doing fine since then.

since this thread my florida that is now 20" has jumped 2 more times...locks are seeming to be a not to far off venture...ducktape isn't enough any more...wish i could just flick it in the nose to learn it, cause several near death exp. just dosen't seem to be getting the job done...

Sucks man, since this thread my little spotted has jumped and lost its entire slimecoat from it, looks like a platinum gar now. Slowly growing it back but it's not a pretty ordeal.
