jumping gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i know the slim coat regrowth deal all to well...after the last jump my fl looked like i took a spoon and ran against the grain all around it...few weeks later and you can't tell that it has ever bailed...i just dread the day i don't find it in time as ever time thus far it has been out for several hours and crispy, but it bounces back...

i have thought about putting a 4' rim/safty net of plexi-glass at a 45 dagree angle to have the gar slide back in after the jumps as it is getting to be to common of an ordeal to put myself or the fish through...

my 18" fl gar has jumped out 3 times now...i have a plexy glass top that is duck taped on and it still manages to get out...i have placed some extra rocks and things on the top to try to contain this beast...has anyone else had jumping issues with thir floridas? or any other gars for that mater?

it is in a 6'x2'x2' 180gal right now and has been in there since it was 6-8"...
We all know gars need a lot of space, i mean a LOT of space that you can give. But your 180gal is ok for now. I have a spotted gar around 20" already and i never had a problem such jumping out of the aquarium ever since i had it, that was 7.5" before. Are the filtration enough for a 180gal? Sometimes water quality is the reason of such behavior aside from having the small space.

the tank is over filtered...1x fx5, 1x emperor 400 filled with bio-balls, 10 or more amazon swards, a field of water celary, a few lilly pads and some pothoes/bamboo hydroponics to give me pirfict water perams at all times...

One of my two FL Gars do. The other never.
