Never had one, but one of my buddies on FB said he returned it. Was too buggy and had lots of issues. I've seen a few review vids and sometimes it seems to be not too responsive. Also, I'm not a fan of its UI and the "bookcase" home pages. Verizon is going to have the Motorola Xoom on Black Friday for $199, on contract though. The Samsung Galaxy tabs are also freaking awesome.
And this is another good one, currently on pre-order: http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T...5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1321977711&sr=1-5
Depends on what she is using it for. If its just for reading and reading alone then the Kindle should be fine but of she wants to use it for other stuff like surfing the web, etc. then go with the ipad IMHO
Verdict
Though the Kindle Fire won 10 out of 18 rounds, to choose between these two devices, you must look at your priorities. Those who want a device primarily for eBook reading will prefer The Nook Tablet’s larger selection, better eReading software, and sharper screen. Parents who want to give their kids the best interactive storybook experience will also prefer Barnes & Noble’s device. However, if you want to do a lot of movie watching, music listening, communicating, web surfing, or gaming, the Kindle Fire’s superior ecosystem, solid sound, and lower price make it a better value.
