Well actually....

when you arrange them in alternating rows there is less chance of water channeling...it remains broke up (Trickling) all the way down allowing for better oxygenation and exposure to the beneficial bacteria...

Ahh man you cant have them messy...I mean come on lol I solved the open area problem with some bio balls. I will post pics of my filtration once I get it all finished and the wires tucked
