Lots of pics past and present

Also the difference in appearance with a nice full grown specimen and the small ones in the LFS tanks is crazy, they might be more popular if there were more adults on display.

This, in so many cases is a true blessing in disguise for many cichlids, and saves many thousands, I bet, from having the same fate as the much more colourful juvenile Oscar, especially the tiger, which is beautiful even as a 2" juvenile.

I know that without previous knowledge of finwins choc, Bobo, I wouldn't have given my choc a second glance whilst on display at the LFS. It was drab beige and brown, about as boring as you can get.

I see a lot of stunning cichlids on here and when I go to my LFS and see them as juves I no longer just pass the tanks because they're nothing to look at, I actually study them now and have a little smile knowing what future beauty they are hiding.

I like them too but think the shape of the head and eye position is a bit goofy looking for some people. Also the difference in appearance with a nice full grown specimen and the small ones in the LFS tanks is crazy, they might be more popular if there were more adults on display.
The head shape and goofy eye position is one of their endearing qualities to me but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Totally agree about the blessing in disguise bit.

Severums don’t get enough credit for their goofy personalities too. The weird face makes them look clueless when they are actually very smart.
Mine slams the lid for food.

Possibly its a blessing in disguise but it might also mean 20 young cichlids are stuck in a 2 foot shop tank for months and months getting harrassed and beaten up by the boss of the tank in an incredibly stressful scene.
Cichlids never look their best in these conditions and I see the same fish sitting in the shop for ages slowly being discounted until they are suddenly all gone one day.
If i ran an LFS I would have a picture of the adult fish stuck to the juvenile tank to help sales. Baby choclates would be more in demand if potential customers could see pictures like these.
