Lots of pics past and present

I remember when I first got them, my wife said, I don't know why your getting them they are not very nice.
They were a dull pinkish brown and rather drab looking.
As with most cichlids, they get beautiful with time.
I agree, and is why I like to keep fish long term. Chocolates seem to go through a lot of neat changes though. Definitely a fish I want to keep one day.

I can't understand why they are not more popular really. They get a nice size are very colourful and for the most part very peaceful in my experience. I have 2 pairs in the same tank and still get little aggression.

I like them too but think the shape of the head and eye position is a bit goofy looking for some people. Also the difference in appearance with a nice full grown specimen and the small ones in the LFS tanks is crazy, they might be more popular if there were more adults on display.
