I ended up doing a water change and rearranging the tank a bit last night. I'll get pics in the next day or two when everyone settles back down. The fish aren't happy with me right now lol
Any chance you could put a standard GATF together with him in the same tank, just for a photoshoot?

That would be a great way to highlight the contrast between the 2, under the same lighting conditions.

If someone has one they want to donate, I'd be happy to. I don't have the funds to purchase another right now, real life is getting in the way of my fishkeeping. This is why my 510 DIY thread has essentially fizzled out; no money to buy glass. :(

Sucks man, this hobby can get costly when dealing with big tanks and big fish ..... I'm laying the plans for my DIY tank myself, and its scaring me, although I figure I have a year or 2

That sucks. I plan on getting the glass first. It would be one of the more costly buys so I can "afford" the rest of the tank faster. Easier to find an extra $50 for wood or PVC or a pump then to find $350 for a chunk of Starfire glass.

Tell me about it. I've got filtration and everything I need ready to go, all I need is glass. I've got about $2000 into this so far, but I'm doing it right lol. All I really need now is the glass, but $300 from the finish line I've run out of funds. More on that in a moment...

...Normally, I'd agree with you but when I started this project, money wasn't anticipated to be an issue. Like I said above, the 510 is actually coming along well, I was about ready to get the glass and start with test fills and whatnot. However, March into April has been a devil of a month for me. My house needed over $2000 in repairs to the sewer system, one of my rental houses was broken into so I had to have the door fixed on it, another one had the fridge go out that I had to replace, and worst of all, my old trusty rusty '93 F-150 gave up the ghost on me leaving me sitting with my then two month old son in a blizzard. The wife wouldn't allow me to fix the truck and made me buy a new-to-me truck, so there's another $23,000 out the window plus the hit I took in insurance with another full coverage vehicle.

So, needless to say, it might be a bit before the 510 gets finished LOL.

On the bright side though, I have an enormous canister filter with a 3,000 gph pump sitting in my garage collecting dust. A couple days ago in a serendipitous moment of clarity, I realized there's nothing really keeping me from putting it on my growout tank. So, that's what I'm gonna do. On payday, if there's any money left (lol), I'm gonna buy some PVC and hook up my 3' tall filter to my 150 to give the fish a little extra oomph on their water conditions. Here's hoping that buys me a few extra months because the fish are really ready to go into the big tank!

I think a 600 would be great for your fish growing out. If you want to keep other fish with them, you need to get them eating pellets. Until they realize they don't have to slaughter their tankmates to eat, you're gonna have losses.

Now, on to the update.

I've had a few people ask for some updated pics of ole Max because of my admittedly audacious claim of having a black Goliath. Well, I think I've gotten some really decent pics that illustrate my point and show just how dark this guy is really getting.

Since the shots of Max and Drogo were so popular, I decided to try to get more. I think you guys will enjoy these. Make sure you enlarge them to really enjoy them.

Up first, a picture were Max and Drogo are actually touching. This was slightly out of focus but still a decent picture that shows Max's colors nicely. If you blow this picture up you can see Drogo's teeth, too.

This next shot I think is absolutely wonderful. If I wasn't already March's POTM winner, I'd have cleaned this up a bit and entered it in the next contest. As we all know though, since I won last month I have to wait three months to enter again. When you enlarge this pic, take note of how the rays in Max's tail are getting very black. As you guys can see, his dark colors in the other pictures are NOT a result of a dark tank but are actually what his colors look like!

All pics taken with Nikon d5100 at f9, shutter 1/200, ISO 320, exposure comp +1, speedlight fired remotely. Lens was a 50mm f1.8 prime.

That is exactly what my old gatfs looked like. The only difference was it had a bit more red in the tail. Now unless we both got black gatfs, you 1, me 3 from 3 different sources, I think it has more to do with water, dark tank syndrome. My gatf when they are over light substrate and background they were bright silver. Even my vatf demonstrated this darkening. I'll try to dig up some old pics.

This whole black goliath thing is pretty flimsy at best.

Check out these pictures of my fish from back in 2007 and 2008...how many black goliaths are there in this school?

Look how dark the 4 in the front are vs the light silvery one in the back....so are they black goliaths?

And check out one of my fish in 2008 and how it has those dark hash marks on the scales...looks pretty familiar at the same size as yours.

You've all seen pictures of mine at 2ft and nobody would say it looks anything like the dead black goliaths you see in the fishing pictures.

The only real black goliaths I've ever seen are bigger ones that have died.

When they die, they all turn black!

Sorry to rain on your parade but that's what I've seen with my own eyes.
