Hey i just read the first page lol so i didnt know anything about fin cutting, just suggesting that every 10 pages may not happen monthly....as eventually members will look at the date of the thread and think that OP wont respond...so maybe a monthly pic and size update would be best IMO, good luck tho awesome fish!

No worries! I update every week or so normally. The every ten pages is just where I photodump the pictures from the previous ten pages so people don't have to search through all those pages to find pics. :)

how big is he now?
When I had him out to cut his fin, he was just a hair over 12" from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail

Below is what I'm going to call the last good picture of this guy for a while. I'm calling this the last picture because I'm about to get out of the Army and I'm sending my wife home ahead of me and she's taking the good camera, so I'm gonna be back to cell phone pics. :(

His fin is pretty much back to normal now. When he's not folding it down to try to run away from my pictures, his fin is triangular and about the same size and shape as his pelvic fins. It looks whole, but I strongly suspect that at this point it will actually continue to grow for another month or so until it's really long and showy like the dorsal fin of so many other GATF of his size. His tail has also healed up nicely. The upper hook is back and his lower hook is just starting to come through again.

The dorsal fin does however have ANOTHER kink right where the last kink was at. :swear: I'm beginning to wonder if he doesn't have some sort of genetic predilection toward having a kinked dorsal fin. The kicker is though, this time his fin is kinked over to his left side instead of straight back. He has a goofy looking Free Willy looking dorsal fin. I'm actually going to repeat the surgery as soon as I post this to see if the fin comes in right this time. If it comes back kinked again, I'm not going to bother the fish anymore.

EDIT: Surgery #2 was a success. He didn't lose a single scale and none of his other fins were torn. Other than the missing dorsal fin, he looks flawless still. I count this as a good learning experience for me if I ever need to do something like this again in the future.

Not to dissuade you from surgery, but a similar phenomenon occurs with the tigrinus catfish when they lose their streamer. Sometimes is grows back straight and other times it comes in like a squiggly line. Maybe it's a matter of luck getting it to come back straight?

Chicx your out of your mind! Lol! I noticed my one tiger had a kink in his dorsal fin as well, the one that is no longer with me, and had it since the day I got him ... I need to look and see if my others have it as well, although I'm sure much less obvious since I've never noticed it next to the others obvious kink ... it may be similar to a male orca in captivity always having his dorsal fin folded over, where in the wild it stands 5 feet tall

I suspect you might be right about luck. I'm really not sure. One way or the other, if the fin doesn't come back flawlessly this time, I'll know its not meant to be! lol

I hope it's not like an orca. Too many other people have a fish with good looking fins that I want it too! lol I suspect that he may have smashed the growing nub against the top of the tank and broke it as he was feeding. He's an extremely aggressive feeder and smashes the pellets hard enough that he comes out of the water and hits the lids at times. It's the only thing I can figure. I'm planning on taking the lids off when I feed him for the next few weeks.

Here's a crappy cell phone pic I snapped earlier today. Normally when I take pictures to post on here I turn off the bubblers and some of the powerheads and use a very nice camera. The strong current is blasting along the front glass with the bubbles, he's right against the back wall in a slack spot.

I think the bubbles make the pic look even cooler! Adds movement to the pic.
It really does! In the pic below, you can really see how turbulent the water is where he likes to hang out.

great photo GAFT
Thanks Jojo! :D

Here's a pic of Max I took the other day. He's doing much better after this surgery. I'm hoping that his fin healed wonky last time because he was just so roughed up after the thrashing that he got from the arowana.

Also note that his hooks actually returned.
