No, They where fine in the 210 that i had. It all depends on the size that they currently are. Eventually i need a 5,000 gallon for just the grouper ... the eel could live his life in a 200 min. Every fish is different you just have to use best judgement when keeping them in tanks... and give them the biggest you can ATM

Nice green moray! How old is he, do you know off hand? I've been planning an eel habitat for a few months now and originally planned on a tess, but Living Art (my favorite aquarium store) has a 3-foot green moray that was turned in by his owner about 2 months ago...they really want to see him get a good home and said they'd practically give him to me if I wanted him, so I've seriously been thinking about it. The tanks I've found on Craigslist are 180 and 210, did find one 240 that I'm trying to get but not sure on it yet. Would he be OK in these? He'd be alone and have it to himself, and I'm planning on constructing caves and tunnels with live rock and PVC piping. I saw this guy and got to feed him and he is just so awesome.

He would be ok for awhile in one of those tanks, but will eventually need a really big tank. Keep in mind he can grow twice as big as he is know. Can you find out what size tank the previous owner had him in?

Yes he would be fine in any of those tanks. Yes he will grow though , over the span of 30 years though .... So the tank would last him a good time , but yes eventually you would want bigger. At my lfs Dallas North Aquarium ( they are all very very experianced owners) they state the eel could live his life out in a 265 min. They dont move around alot , and dont need alot of space. Ive always kept my tanks open on the top , and i feel like if they dont like the home then they jump out. My green has never attempted to leave the tank , he will get really excited to see me and swim up on the glass center brace , its really cool. But my eel is growing and my 360 gallon is almost finished!! Ill keep upgrading for my eel just because i want him to have the biggest home possible. Being 18 though funds get tight.

My new 360 gallon is going to be 144x24x24 thats 12'x2'x2'

WOot cant wait to get pics up and get the fish back into there home

Get the green, you wont regret it.

Well within 30 years I'd think I should be moved into a house that I own and was hoping to make a bigger eel habitat in an in-wall display in my livingroom. So by the time he needs it, I'll be able to go bigger. Plus I'd be done with school in the next 3 years and making a lot more money, so it should be far more affordable. Everything I've read says that they're similar to snakes in that as long as they're well fed, comfortable, and feel safe, they feel no need to move from where they are. They only reason they move in the wild is in search of food, to evade predators, or to find a mate. Like my snakes stay curled up on one spot, only moving around to get a drink or eliminate, and otherwise are content with their weekly meals and don't require much else. I figured the eels would be similar. He'll have a cave and plenty of tunnels to explore plus open water, so he should feel comfy.

Now you said yours ate your tess, were they close in size or was the green larger? I was thinking about getting my tess anyway and having them live together as long as they were the same size and grew at the same rate with the same feeding schedule. But now I'm unsure.

PinkLady- Best bet is to start with them small and grow them big. I have had 4 eels in one tank and had no problems, they where all around 12 inches. My spotted moray tore up my tessalata and almost killed it, it was something else. Though my spotted will attack if you put your hand in the tank , hes got some major issues. Though trail and error is really the only way to make it happen , just be ready to seperate if they do fight.

wolfsburgfanatic- Thanks man:headbang2

Gobrian44- I got him a foot and a half shorter and a lot skinnier. The people where looking to get rid of him and do more of a tang / pretty tank. They where tired of him eating all the fish , although his behavoir in my tank is incredible. He is amazing with my other fish , his best friend is the 3inch clown trigger. He just likes to mess with me :D
