What sort of catfish would be a good feature fish for my tank? The tank is an 85 gallon tank and it will have sand as the substrate. It will have a spounge filter rated for 90gallons but the dimensions are 75x75x80cmish. Around 320L I think. I have algea wafers that my cories and pleco eats and flakes for other fish. (these are in my other tank) so would most catfish also eat this? it would possibly be the only fish in the tank or i could have others. I am in australia so many are banned and many cost a fortune. My budget is around 50$ (aud)

What other fish do you have in the aquarium? With the exception of the corydora most catfish species are more active at night.

If you don't care about a active catfish the Raphael Catfish would be a good choice. They are great with mild aggressive community fish.

Because I have always had hard, high pH tap water, Synodontus petricola have worked for me
Some others that are probably hard to find where you live, that prefer similar water conditions
Pimelodella chargresi

I also like the whiptails cats from the genus Sturisomatchthys

The pH where I am is around 7-8 according to the governments website. I have looked at the synodontis species and while they are nice, something about there sorta tube shape looks strange to me. I really like pimelodidae cats but unfortunately they are very expensive. I do like whips but would also like something that swims around besides the bottom and is fairly active.
