alrite...heres the debate. i have 4 sheets of .5 polypropelene and 1 sheet of 3/4 acrylic. I cant bear to cut them up to make a 650 knowing i can make an 800. Also i have no cost in the steel, it was all free.

1st question? will the 3/4 acrylic support a 4' height with a center upright?

2nd question? finish the 650 and have a 20"x96" for another tank or just build the 800?

Even supported 3/4" acrylic will not do the job at 40". Your original plan has a chance at success with the items you plan, I highly doubt a tank planned at 40 inches witht eh same material would survive. You already have the shell for the 650, finish it.

3/4" wouldn't work at 48". 1.25" would be minimum IMO with 1.5" preferable. 3/4" might get by if you put two supports 1/3 across the front and then tied them front to back both top and bottom, but I wouldn't risk it.

Make a 20" tank with the same footprint and build a stand to hold both. You could create a sump inside the back of the 20" tank that would run the entire length. It wouldn't have to be very wide to hold enough media and you could have a variety of media types to polish the water in addition to bio filtering.

I was thinkinng it would be cool side by side, but an over under saves space for more tanks :) Since the 1st tank will be steel and polypropolene i think im going to go with wood and some kind of coating on the 2nd to aquire some different skills like fiberglassing. I would really like to try the Ames Blue Max though, this project just got extended for sure ha!

good news. i'm doing a bit of fab work for a set of torches! This means i can fix my bowed top and bottom front angle. I've tried small propane torches with a car jack to get them square again and that was only worth a good laugh. They bowed back into place instantly after the jack pressure was released. Also i finally move into my house by the end of the month and i can paint the frame again, start installing my poly and glass. sorry no recent pics. nothing exciting has happened. i fixed the bottom strap supports and added another for where the seams of poly meet on the bottom. The sheets are 8ft. and the tank is 9ft. Stupid decision on my part. These seams on the bottom and back will test the limits of my heat welder.
