im still going to put some silicone on to be on the safe side.

New silicone doesn't stick very well to old silicone.
If you're going to reseal it, you will need to cut the old bead out, clean it with isopropyl alcohol (or similar) and then reseal it.

Also, make sure you wait long enough before filling it. It would suck to do all of this work only to have uncured silicone kill your fish.
