This is such great information, and I really appreciate it. I have a 10.5" Florida Gar in a 55 that I have been feeding feeders, and trying to transition to other foods (not much luck yet, but want to make sure he is stable in new tank before I withhold food to force him to try new things.)

He is alone, right now, except for the Rosy Red Minnows that I put in there to keep him company, for a short while. I saw a "Crocodile Gar" in a LFS the other day, about 8" long, and was wondering whether it would be a good addition to my tank.

Is that some kind of hybrid? Would I be risking any inter-gar aggression?

Incidentally, the LFS where I got my Florida had it in a tank with 2 gigantic show Ryukin. It looked kind of awesome, in a creepy and foreboding kind of way.

Crocodile gar (I, II, III) is a name given to a few hybrids between Lepisosteus gars and the Alligator gar. It's not really a well-known term as far as I know, so I doubt your LFS would know to name a hybrid that (they are rare anyways).

It's such a generic nickname that it could be any species. Probably a florida or gator, though. We'd need pics.

Alex you weren't kidding in your Cuban article when you noted them as the second-most aggressive. Mine quickly became king of the tank and loves biting at the other gars during feeding time to get them out of his way.

Madding do you still feed your gars every couple days? The reason I'm curious is I have found feeding schedule to affect the aggressiveness of my smallest gator gar. When I started giving smaller daily feedings the aggression seemed to cease.

I switched to feeding every day and now the gars do not damage any tankmates, and all they do to each other is fray fins every so often.

I find it odd that they are that aggressive, because besides my smallest gator gars none of the other gator gars have shown any aggression towards tankmates. And gators are supposed to be the most aggressive gar species.
